Been ill for nearly 2 years Dr fobbing me off!

For nearly 2 years I've been suffering from severe headaches which I wake up with every morning, no painkiller will shift these headaches and I feel like I'm hungover constantly! I take dizzy turns, can be standing on the pavement and feel as if it's actually sinking, have blurred vision when trying to read small print like a newspaper, my legs and arms can feel heavy or shake like jelly, I take hot flushes, have no energy and just feel so ill I honestly think I'm dying!

I've lost count of how many times I've been to the Dr. I've seen 3 different Dr's, been put on antidepressants, Propranolol beta blockers, Naproxen, and he's now got me on another migrane pill which I refuse to take due to the weight gain side effects! He's adamant I'm suffering from migrane but I really don't agree! I can no longer exercise I've sold my bike and I've rehomed my dog as I couldn't walk him as I've lost all interest and just don't feel up to doing anything. Just having a shower and washing my hair makes me feel ill. My son started school last Tuesday and was finding it difficult to settle in and was very distressed and upset which made me upset and very stressed and yesterday and today I have been feeling very ill which I think has been triggered by the stress. I'm sitting on my sofa writing this and my head is burling! I've had 2 different lots of bloods taken over the last 2 years all fine. My partner is sick of listening to me moaning how ill I'm feeling. I've got the Dr next Tuesday but will probably be fobbed off again when I tell him I suspect I have CFS. Sorry for going on but I just feel no one understands me sad

I totally feel for you I'm having similar probs not headache exactly but tight pressure on my head squeezing sensation constantly feel woozy my legs feel one min like lead weights the next like jelly as if I'm going to keel over I spend all my time inside my house S trying to go out for short walk I feel I don't have the balance I'm breathless. Even lifting my arms up is a real effort waiting for ct scan which I'm told could take weeks. Trying to be positive but so hard when feel so ill, I gave up working four weeks ago due to this, I feel I'm getting nowhere as dr will not do blood tests don't understand why. I do not suffer from depression or anxiety it's so worrying the fatigue is soo bad

I'm going to ask for a ct scan when I go on Tuesday just to see if it could be something very serious but he'll probably fob me off with that aswell! I'm honestly at my wits end. I too get the feeling of pressure in my head. At the moment I feel as if my forehead is being squeezed in a vice! I also get a sore face at times too. My little or has just started school and I will hoping to get a part time job but won't be doing anything while I'm feeling like this! I'd push for blood tests if I were you and if you get nowhere I'd see a different Dr. That's what I'll be be doing if I don't get what I want on Tuesday but I can assure you I'm not coming home with another packet of pain killers! Hope you get some answers soon. I'll keep you posted as to how I get on x

If you have CFS all your blood tests will mostly likely come back normal,at present CFS is a name for symptoms, but there was a research paper on August 30 by the university of California It is a ground breaking landmark paper on CFS and ME.They identified biological marks that they believe will lead to a diagnostic test for CFS,they also listed the triggers for CFS and discovered that the cells in CFS patients have gone into a protective hibernation state it is an auto immune reaction to an infection,my trigger is the flu and they do list influenza, there is a long list of viral infectious and bacteria infections too.

No need to apologize.  Most of us who go on here know what it's like to suffer severely.  You very well could have CFS, but I really think you should try an anti anxiety medication to see if it helps.  I've been a caregiver to my extremely ill husband for over 30 years, and he has a very severe case of CFS and fibromyalgia, but he also suffers from an anxiety disorder.  An anxiety disorder will cause severe headaches, feeling ill like nausea, dizziness, light headedness, weakness etc. and even extra pain (from the intense muscles).  And even though my husband is very weak (physically) from the CFS, his anti anxiety medication helps him tremendously, which reduces the severity of all of his other symptoms.  Severe head aches could also be from hormone inbalnces (like too much estrogen).  I used to have horrible migraines every day as a teenager, all because of a severe hormone inbalance of way too much estrogen.  I'm sure you already know this, but the bad head aches could be from stress or even eye strain too.  I recommend trying some relaxation techniques and somethng like a very small dosage of Ativan.  It has done absolute wonders for my husband and stopped him from having severe panic attacks, head aches, shakiness etc.  Also, have you had your blood sugar levels checked, and are you eating well enough?  Low blood sugar levels will cause many of these symptoms too, especially the shakes and a panicky  feeling.  Let me know how you do and what you think, ok?  Good luck to you.  Sandy

      Hi Sandy

The Dr thought I was suffering from anxiety at the start and put me on Citalopram anti depressants but they made no difference I'm just the same! I thought it could be to do with having the Mirena coil fitted so I had that removed and I'm just the same so not that either. I eat plenty of food too and all clean healthy foods no junk I always have breakfast, lunch & dinner and only drink water. Think I'm going to ask for more blood tests and a ct scan to rule anything else out but I'm pretty sure from my symptoms it could be CFS. Will see how I get on when I go Tuesday.

Clair, Citalopram is simply an anti depressnt - and an anti depressant does not help if the problem is anxiety!  Sometimes an anti depressant can work hand in hand with an anti anxiety medication, but just using an anti depressant alone WILL NOT help much (if at all) with an anxiety problem.  Speaking from 30 years of experience with my husband (who has both conditions) I would definitely recommend an anxiety medication such as Ativan.  Be sure to distinguish between the two and remind the doctor that he did not give you an anti anxiety medication to try.  It could really help.  Plus, I was just reading today that many people who have head aches or migraines benefit GREATLY from taking Magnesium, because it is like a muscle relaxant, and it works on the nerves as well as the muscles, and helps many people with their head aches and pain!  My husband uses Magnesium for his muscle pain and head aches.  Plust Magnesium is so good for so many other things our bodies need.  It's great for pain, headaches, your heart function, stress and relaxation, blood pressure, the immune system, the nerves etc. etc.  So consider starting Magnesium supplementation.  We use what's called Malic Acid with Magnesium - which is terrific for muscle pain and stress.  Don't just get any kind of magnesium since it could cause diahrea.

The Dr told me Citalopram was prescribed to help with anxiety as they were used to treat that too. To be honest I think they just hand out anti-depressants like sweets these days. I'll ask about Ativan when I go on Tuesday. I do already take a magnesium supplement I buy them from Boots but don't really feel they make much difference to my headaches. I'll maybe try the ones you mentioned see if they're any better or maybe the Dr would prescribe some.

Thank you very much for your information it's much appreciated smile

hi, I forgot to mention to you that I would recommend starting out with the anti anxiety medication at bed time to help you sleep, and then you just might not wake up with those headaches.  I don't know how well you're sleeping at night, but how well you sleep can definitely make a big difference on how you feel in the morning.  The usual starting dosage of Ativan is 1 mg.  My husband takes 1 mg at night before bed, and then during the day, if he starts to feel a head ache or anxiety coming on, he'll take a half mg. by splitting the pill in two.  A half usually helps, but if not, he'll take the other half later on if he still needs it..

I find this very interesting. I do the exact same thing. For me Ativan helps me sleep but worry about being on it so long. Without it I can't do nearly the things I usually could do!

Have you been tested for Lyme disease?

My CFC is a symptom of my Lyme disease And your symptoms sound very similar.

It's so hard for others to understand and it's such a brutal way to live life.

I have gotten significantly better in he last 2 years but was first sick in 2003.

    Where abouts do u live?

Hi, no I haven't been tested for Lyme disease but I'll be sure to ask about it on Tuesday.

You're right when you say it's a brutal way to live. You just don't know how you're going to be from one day to the next. It's horrible.

      I live in Stirling, Scotland.

I'm in Canada and Lyme disease is just starting to be recognized.

Look up the symptoms. It's worth looking into.

I know what u mean by not knowing where you'll be from day to day. Or hour to hour!

    Hi Claire

So sorry you are feeling so unwell and not getting any useful answers. Is not at all helpful when drs just fob you off is it.

I have had ME/CFS for 20 yrs . Had to take ill health retirement from nursing.I had migraine attacks for years prior to ME, but it became worse with ME o the point it was constant for a year before I had any relief. It came when I was out on a drug for chronic nerve pain .gabapentin which is a fairly common drug given to people with ME. Didn't do much for my other pain but even now still helps keep migraine at bay.

I would never tell other people what drugs they should be taking as not all drugs suit all people. It is helpful though to know how others are treated and find some relief. I cannot tolerate any pain meds so don't take any. I have anxiety most days on and off but again take nothing for it. Sometimes supplements can help .like magnesium .but is always best to discuss with youd dr.

I think that you have gone on more than long enough with your symptoms and should go to your go and ask for a referral to a hospital consultant. Aside from anything else ,other associated symptoms with bad headaches should be further investigated. Two lots of bloods over two years is nothing . stand your ground and say you cannot carry on like you are.it is destroying your life and you need sme definite answers.

It must be very hard to rest with a little one , but try to relax when you can. And find some calm

Let us now how you get on with your GP. Remember it is your body your life and you are clearly not well and need some relief.

    Take care x

      Hi Janet

Thank you for replying. I'm sorry to hear that you've been a sufferer for so long. I'm at my wits end after 2 years so can't even begin to imagine what you've been through.

I'm not leaving the Dr on Tuesday without a referral for a scan or to see some kind of specialist as I really can't go on like this it's really getting me down.

I'll post back on here and let you know how I get on x
