Been taking 50mg valium for about 2 months, now really scared, please give me some advice.

Hi,

I'm currently a student and got valium off the internet to help me get to sleep. Because in halls as it's ridiculously loud, I ended up taking 50mg a night about 5 days a week..

Been doing this for the past 2 months and I've been reading stuff online about coming off it and it's frightened so much!

Should I just go cold turkey, how bad will it be and how long will it last? I really have the urge to go the doctors ASAP as I'm worried for my health but will this also go down on my health record and will it jeopardise being employed in the future if they ask to view my medical records? I can't believe I've gotten myself in this situation I feel so stupid and ashamed.

I've also just rang the NHS help line to explain and waiting on a call back, but, it seems some nurses/doctors are really uneducated in these circumstances.

Would be really grateful of any help.

Hi John, understand your problem, future jobs ok , most of the country on some sort of similar meds. Go to your own Doc and be open with him, he will advise best way to come off. Would imagine taperring off would be easy after only 2 months , but take his advice on that. You won't be the first he's heard of with this problem, and he may even give you proper Meds to help you sleep. ( on 4mg forDiazepam 30yrs )

Hi John, you must NOT cold turkey but ween yourself down VERY slowly by 5mg per week roughly that way you will not have such violent withdrawl symptoms ok!You will experience sweats  and shakes but this will ease and gradualy go over time but i can not stress enough weening off these tablets slowly ok John. Be strong and you will do it ,i was on a high dose once but not as high as you and this is the way i succeeded but i still take 2mg at night as i have Fibromalagia.

Went to the GP today and told her everything, she has prescribed me 20mg a night for the next 4 days until I go back to university (on a reading week atm) and discuss it with my GP down there for a further prescription..

      Whats your views on this?

That's great, because tapering from 20mg is a better starting point than 50mg. Get stable of 20mg and then start tapering progressively! I would say reduce 15-25% of your dosage every week and a half, but it could be too much. If it is, - 12,5% of the initial dosage every week or two. Don't do cold turkey. Never.

Thanks Jim, hearing someone say 20mg is ok to go from 50 is quite a relief, I thought that this may be too little.. Do you think it's fine to keep going to the gym while going through this? I can't wait to be free from this, some of the horror stories actually made me feel like crying it was that scary. I just want to be off it completely ASAP and never take them or any benzo ever again.

Well, if your doc prescribed you 20mg, it should be fine. But ya you mught experience withdrawal physical and psychological symptoms, but don't worry, it's just because your body needs to adapt! Im currently and in a withdrawal process too. I know the feeling of being scared. But try not to lose yourelf into it. To cope with it I do a 5km 3-5 times a week, drink a lot of water, do breathing exercice when I feel angitated and tense, and I try to remember it's a withdrawal process and it will pass (on the short, med and long terms). And just started going to the gym lately. The one thing that kept me from going was the dizziness. I had an intense vertigo for about 1 month.  But don't stop living eventho it could be hard. Go outside and do some exercice. Don't isolate yourself. You don't have to be alone...and your definitly not smile

She seemed quite uneducated in these cases so I just hope I'll be ok, I feel like I'm naturally quite an anxious person but overall I feel like I'm mentally quite strong if that makes sense? Meaning hopefully I'll be able to cope with the psychological symptons. I'm just worried of the physical symptons.. I usually go to the gym alot anyway and do quite vigirous weight training and light cardio (was even doing this fine while on 40mg valium.. which may seem odd, but I felt fine doing it?). Do you mind if we can keep in touch? it'd be nice to have someone to talk to regularly if I do start to suffer or get scared out of my control.. I have told my mum about it but I played it down alot saying it's just a sleeping aid that I need a couple of weeks to come off of to be careful, as the last thing I want to do is worry her. Also on another note, where does alcohol fall into this process? I'm supposed to be going out tonight, as it's my last night with my friends before returning to Univeristy.. what do you think I should do? Should I just make an excuse and avoid it? Or take 5mg valium and just not drink much?

psychoogical symptoms are hard to cope with when they last for long because of the long tapering process. Sometimes you might just feel like your drowning in them. But you might not have to go through all this. Just remember that anxiety, worry, fear, Internet increase the intensy of your symptoms. Dont mix alcohol with valium. Just dont. No, be honnest, tell your friend if you feel they should know. I told all my friends because they were asking me why I stopped drinking. A party is still "enjoyable" sober. Dont drink at all, just to make sure, since youre taking 20mg. And read this: http://www.benzo.org.uk/manual/bzcha01.htm

When you'll start to taper, you'll notice how your body react and you'll ajust your training in time. Ya we can keep in touch! My parents didnt quiet understand what I was good through, but they were there for me. About alcholol, I just reply in another message but the reply is waiting to be moderated since it contains a internet link so you can educate yourself with benzo withdrawal !

I have done quite a bit of research in the past 2 days because my minds been racing with worry.. seems to be alot of contradtictive information out there though. That ashton manual says that people found taking health supplements such as vitmains/minerals were found to be at best useless or actually harmful, yet I've read articles saying they help..

Ya it's confusing. Ashton manuel is a pertinent source, it's a complicated business since there are some many factors to take into consideration. Just forget about alcohol. Don't mix at all I suggest since your'e taking a high dose. A party can still be enoyable. And tell your friends if you feel like you should.

DONT DO COLD TURKEY! Stop the meds progressively and with the help of a professionnal. You'll certainly have withdrawal syptoms and at some point you might think that your "going crazy" and get the feeling that your not yourself anymore. But you won't become crazy. Its normal to feel weird during the process and it surely passes. Your body must adapt to lower doses. And when you're stable (after taking the same dose for 10-14 days) you'll notice you get better....this is when you'll have to taper again....But don't worry, you'll get through this and you will be more than fine. As long as you'll be on the drug, and tapering gradually, you might experience all sorts of fluctuating symptoms and incomforts. Go see a doctor or a specialist to set up a tapering strategy! it will certainly help in many ways. Also, stop reading all the Internet horrors. It won't do you any good.

    Hi John.

I have been looking for a reliable on line site to buy diazepam. By the sounds of it you have found one. Would you be able to recommend it to me.
