been taking sertraline 25mg for five weeks then on 50mg for 1week

These tablets made my symptoms for anxiety and panick attacks worse. Doctor upped them from 25 to 50mg but told him yesterday I was worse on the 50mg, he now told me to go back on 25mg for two weeks and then start on citalopram 20mg. I discovered I had tried them a year ago so have decided I won't start on them. I want to wean myself of the 25mg sertraline and as I have only been taking them for 6 weeks I wondered if I could wean myself off in 2weeks.   Can anyone advise,. thanks.

the slower the better..even when you stop the side effects linger for a while..have been off for 5 weeks now..finally feeling somewhat "normal"..side effects gone..I was only on sert for 3 months..worst 3 months of my life..lol..used Ativan to help with anxiety..good luck..

Thanks for your reply. Is Ativan the ones you have come off.  My granddaughter thinks I should try again with the ones that made me bad last year although I think I was only on them a few days. Wish I could find something with no side affects. I used to be given diazapam(short term)and never got hooked on them, weaned myself off after 10 days but the Dr won't give me them, said they are addictive but from what I hear all these tablets are addictive...grrr!

I decided to go to the doctor and said I wanted to stop altogether and although she said to have 1 every alternate day for 1 week, then 1/2 tablet for another week as i hadn't been on them long enough. although they have made my hives, which never had before but got in April, worse and last night my whole body was covered in these red road map-like blotches from head to toe.  The ones on my front shoulders are the only ones to itch.  I suggested coming right off them and taking a diazapam which she  gave me for when I first took the tabs  and I only took them for a few days. She said that would be ok having n ot been on them long. I have now filled in a referral form for cognitive therapy as I do not want to take any more tablets for my problem.

I have been taking sertraline 50mg for 3 months and it hasn't helped with depression or anxiety, I still have them. I have decided to wean myself off to. I started taking 25 mg 2 nights ago. I'm going to try this, not sure for how long, and then try taking 25m every other night and so on. I think , for me, they have made things worse. Does anyone know the best way to wean off? Peace to all.

I was only on 25 ml for 6 weeks. I started cold turkey. My doc said it was ok. No side effects.

thanks Kathy, my granddaughter now tells me she is on citapramol and finds they are great, but I have IBS and the pains have been terrible since being on these tabs. I have had to start taking buscopan again, never had to for a long time.  It is frightening me as to how I will be after weaning off them as I do get bad panic attacks.

The doctor told me I hadn't been on them long enough and I could take a diazapam to help any withdrawal symptoms as last week I was on 50mg, but 25mg for 5weeks before.   Thanks for your help.

Hi guys. I have been suffering with anxiety and depression most of my life. Have been on and off iof Venlafaxine which helped and got on with life but still had underlining anxiety. Now on 50 mg Sertraline.for about six weeks but feel a lot worse. Do you think I should carry on? I've heard good things about it and it may take up to 8 weeks to feel better and I feel a little better than I originally did in the first couple of weeks. I can feel ok one minute then feel suicidal the next. I have terrible physical sensations that make me feel that something bodily is wrong. Sorry to hijack your discussion but I'm not feeling great.

I've honestly not heard many on the discussion have positive effects from sertraline, it's been 3 months for me. I def have the side effects to, the worst is still having anxiety, depression and jittery in the mornings. But they do say everyone is different. It may take longer then we all think to work to, idk. But since it's not working and making things worse I'm going to get off of them.

Hi Tonya, my granddaughter was ill for a month but now she is ok on the citalopram, and as the sertraline made me worse I am supposed to start on these others in two weeks.   I forgot they never agreed with me before and wondering now if I never gave them long enough.  Have heard they are just as bad so wanted to wean myself off but as I got rid of all but the two weeks of sertraline, I am worried I won't have enough to wean myself off.

Hi Sheena, can you get your scrip refilled in order to wean, and then maybe throw the extra ones away?

Alan the 50mg made me more panicky and anxious and stomach pains, so was reduced back to 25mg. and then start on an alternative which I discovered I had  sometime last year and stopped them as I was feeling worse.   Everyone is different though. Hope you feel better soon.

Hi Tonya, I will have enough as it turns out as Dr said 1 every alternate day for a week then 1/2 every alternate day, and I think I will do that although my hives have got worse and I would really like to stop altogether and take a diazapam for several days.  I was given them to help when i first took the tablets.

I've been taking Sertraline (50mg) a day for only five days, I know medication needs to run through your body for a couple of weeks to benefit it's effect. But I've noticed I have been having hot flushes, and occasional sweating bouts not to add a muggy head. I'm in two minds to stop taking them even though it's early stages.

If they take soooo long to work and make you feel worse wouldn't we feel better within 8 or so weeks without them anyway? I plod along in life not really stretching myself with underlining anxiety and then I have an episode of stress like a family member dying and then my whole world falls apart. I start questioning everything like why didn't I do this or that when I was younger? What am I doing with my life etc. Then I suppose it turns into a nervous breakdown of sorts. Had so many episodes like this and any self esteem I had plummets. I'll stick with the sertraline for a while and see but boy do I feel like crap.

Your right Alan, I've been on fluoxetine in the past and as far as I can remember had no side effects. And to be fair I thought the Dr would of put me back on them, as they're anti anxiety and anti depressant. But he's put me on Sertraline and I'm not reading good reviews on it.

There are good reviews generally. I was on venlafaxine for years and realise they really did help but kind of numbed me and just stayed in a comfort zone. I don't know why but I came off them after feeling better and then spiralled into hell again. I have been on sertraline for 5 to 6 weeks and although I may well have been dead for the first couple of weeks I think there's light at the end of the tunnel.

Thanks Alan ??, I've had a rough few weeks before starting Sertraline. Now it isn't so bad, though it could be psychology that I'm taking something for my Anxiety

      ??

alan I am glad you are getting on ok with the sertraline and I would have possible kept having them if it had never made my hives and IBS worse, I am in my 7th week and have no other side effects now apart from that. My granddaughter had them and was really bad for about a month but stuck with them and is fine now, so they help some people but not others. Good luck,
