Being able to walk 4 or 5 miles post op

Hi Hippies (I really was one back in the day)

I am due to have a LHR in early January. Is there anyone out

there walking briskly for 4 or 5 miles after a full hip op. I

appreciate it may take a few months but without this to look

forward to I don't see the point of having the replacement done.

I have had an active lifestyle and hope to continue being active;

but without the pain!

Also what does anterior or lateral mean? I was told I am having a full hip op but the technical words I was not told about!

All the best

David

Not walking much yet, only 17 days post-op.

    Anterior - Frontal

    Lateral - Side

    Posterior- Rear

that's the direction the surgeon usesto get at thejoint, so is where your scar will be.

David hi, i too had similar worries - no need. I am eight months + post op and am much more active than i was pre op. I do 39 mins every day on a static bike and i do Pilates at home daily and ngo to classes. I also walk every day ( though i did have a fall last week so i guess one has to be careful always). I dont do 4 miles bit i could if I needed/had to. Someone on here called Mic is planning to start jogging again. He and i are advocates of pushing yourself and putting the work in. Others will advise caution- listen to your body is probably the best advice. But dont put the surgery off. It will ne the best thing you do to have the op.

It takes time and rest also to heal but you will heal. Anterior, lateral and posterior refer to the approach the surgeon takes to operate and each one has its pros and cons. Most nhs in the UK do posterior as its the most traditional one.

I had a THR at 33 and was back to my normal activity level within 6-8 months... Pain free. In the years since then I have become an avid hiker, biker and kayaker. This September I had my other hip done- I am back at the gym 10 weeks post op- but recovery has been slower.. I'm older and this hip had more damage. BUT- I am already planning 5-7 mile hikes this summer.. It can be done and it's worth it- BUT- it's a slow and careful process! I say go for it- the pain will only get worse.

I’ll take just one of those and would be more than pleased,  it’s posts like this that show me the way to go forward, I sometimes think my best days are well behind, but  “biker and kayaker”...Well looks like I got a lot to look forward too...

    Hi David

I used to be hippy when I was young too.

I am 13 weeks post RTHR and back at work as a secondary school teacher. I can do everything I used to do before my hip started playing up including taking my dogs out for long walks.

At the moment I am probably only doing a couple of miles for each walk but I'm doing this twice a day. I am looking forward to longer walks in the Christmas holidays when I have more time.

I am not in any pain but I am very tired at the end of the day. I don't mind this as it is still relatively early in the healing process.

Unless you are very unlucky you won't regret having the operation.

Oh, I had the op on the side of my hip - cutting throught the muscles - very traditional - done by a super surgeon. Think this is called lateral.

    Very best wishes

Agreed, don't put surgery off - I was in hospital pre-op with another guy who had delayed, he was in a much worse place than me.  We had our surgery on the same day, and I was up and walking aroundover 2 days earlier than he was.

Moral of the story; the worse you are before you go in, the longer it will take to recover as you are not in as good a shape.

    Good luck with yours.

    Hi David.

You should be abl to walk as f ar and as fast as you like wthout any trouble. The bad news is not straight away. I am eigt weeks post op and manage two thirds of a mile tice a day. I could do alot more ubt my crutch arm gets sore. Once my muscles are stronger I will  find i a lot easier.

Anterior means at the front (quicker recovery I think)

    Lateral = at the side

Posterior = You won't be ale to sit down for a week (LOL)

    Different surgeons prefer different methods.

    Best wishes

Hello with my first hip at 14 weeks I walked 7 miles and checked with pedometer . now had 2nd hip and only 6 weeks post op so just back to 2 miles maximum now but can't wait to get back to long walks. so you won't have a problem.

    Hello David

I guess I'm still a hippy, living in a commune. Anyhow yes to walking as far as you want after a few months. I had my right THR in July and (besides a loss of fitness) I am back to my usual self and can walk anywhere for any time.I constantly thank my wonderful surgeon and the ability of the human body. Actually I gave the surgeon a decent bottle of champagne last time I saw him. He was touched....
