Benefits of suppressive therapy?

I was diagnosed with hsv type 2 a week ago and am just nearing the end of my terrible first outbreak. i’ve been reading a lot about herpes and i’m still having quite a hard time understanding it. my boyfriend is super supportive but I feel terrible for contracting this disease. my first outbreak has been the worst experience of my life and I wanted to kill myself over the pain I experienced. since taking valtrex 500mg twice a day, the pain has stopped but i’m 5 days into a ten day course and now I have a nonstop itch that just won’t go away and it’s the worse itch ever! my main question is preventing this to ever happen again once it finally does go away. i read some people take valtrex daily to prevent future outbreaks. how effective is that? and will it help keep my boyfriend from contracting it? I go back to my doctor in two days and i just don’t know what to ask for in terms of help. i’m a diabetic so i’m more at risk because i’m immunocompromised and I just don’t know what kind of treatment for prevention to take.

If this is a confirmed first outbreak (by swab test?), then that is most commonly associated with recent infection, so do you know for a fact that your bf doesn't carry it and gave it to you? Because if he does have it, you wouldn't need to protect him, as you both have it. Then you can see how it goes and only take daily meds if you discover you get frequent outbreaks. Subsequent outbreaks are usually mild in comparison and become less over time for many people.

I did get diagnosed by a swab test. does this mean I got it from him? he has no signs or symptoms at all.

A positive swab is rarely false, unfortunately. It's entirely possible for a person to be a carrier with no symptoms, or no recognisable symptoms. In fact, most people with HSV are like that. He should test for HSV2 IgG.
