Benign fasciculation syndrome

Has anyone ever heard of this? I think I might have it, you know. I'm not worried about it, not in the slightest, but I am going to get it checked. A lot of the symptoms I have, which I thought were due to anxiety, can be caused by this condition. It sounds terrible, if you judge it by its name, but it's basically just involuntary muscle spasms. Apparently, it can CAUSE anxiety and be caused BY anxiety. There's a double-edged sword if ever there was one.

I have been having symptoms recently that have scared me, and I have been scared because I have thought it was something serious, like MS or ASL, but this condition, "BFS", gives similiar symptoms, but is of no serious risk to your health, and it's also very common.

So, I suppose I am posting this in an attempt to help others with health anxiety. So, if you are experiencing muscle twitches or spasms, or fatigue, or muscle pain, have a little read about FBS and have a word with your doctor. Apparently, in 1993, 121 people who were diagnosed with this condition, ranging between 2-32 years since diagnos, were assessed, and the illness had not gotten worse or lead to a more serious illness in any of them; they were all peachy keen, jelly beans.

Sorry my phone posted it twice. It didn't show I had already replied. I looked up the syndrome. I have muscle twitches, but I think it's my anxiety.

And it's possible that it is. For me, though, that'll be an okay response, too. If it turns out I don't have FBS and the muscle twitches are simply due to anxiety, then I know once I get to the cause of my anxiety they'll go away.

Yes David, it is very common! I have had it myself for over 30 years! I'm still alive LOL. It's caused by anxiety because when we're anxious  The brain becomes very active and that's why we get all kinds of symptoms. No need to worry it causes no harm .  if you can reduce your anxiety the fasciculations will reduce also

      Hello Jan,

I started experiencing body-wide twitching about 3 months ago. I made the mistake of googling my symptoms and of course you probably already guessed what was the first thing that popped up. I was in a complete state of panic, every single website mentioned this dreaded disease. Needless to say, I've been a complete mess for the past few months. In the meantime everything twitches: It started in the back, then spread to my arms, forearms, hands, thighs, calves, feet, chin, neck, lips, and yes even my tongue. I'm constantly testing myself for weakness, and recording myself to see if I'm slurring....it is driving me nuts lol. I'm waiting to be scheduled for an EMG and nerve conduction test.

Luckily I've found out about BFS during my random wanderings online and read quite a bit about anxiety. Do you also experience body pain? I find that I have a lot of random muscle pains and tenderness/pain abound my wrists and my feet.
