Best diet

I've had a stoma for over 3 years and my life is back to normal after suffering with acute UC for 5 years. I eat more or less what I want although I avoid some of the difficult to digest food items. My question is what diet do others follow to ensure they get the right balance of nutrients. I believe protein is important as is a banana a day to absorb phosphorous. Also I'm trying vegetarianism.
I'm curious.

Thanks for your reply. it is interesting how the majority of people think a Stoma is the end of the world because of ignorance. Things are normal and I'm grateful as it saved my life. it's unlikely I'll ever catch you up though, just goes to show, 52 years, Wow!

Hi Darasdad, Glad to hear you are doing ok. You could ask to see a Nutritionist on the NHS as it important to get enough nutrition and easily digestible protein and vitamins and minerals, especially if you are cutting out meat.
You and I have chatted in the past especially as my son had an ileostomy and stoma due to UC, he then had a reversal a year later with a j pouch. You might be interested to know that his j pouch is behaving brilliantly, thank goodness. It is 4 years old now and he is able to be as active as he was before UC 5 years ago. Long may it continue. He gets married this year and feels lucky that he was able to have the surgery and return pretty much to normal. He eats everything in large quantities because of his sports and his only symptom is loose output, he gets cramps if he doesn't drink enough in summer.
Good luck in the future, Sheila.

Thanks Sheila. it's good to hear things are going well for your son. I'm actually trying to lose weight while at the same time sustain my wellbeing. We have always eaten lots of fish but the default to meat was bothering us. I know protein and salt and phosphorus are important but it was other Stoma wearers experiences I was interested in. To date I've eaten and drank anything only avoiding peanuts, coconut, mushrooms and sweetcorn because judging by the output there seems little point. There is some information on-line but often those in the same position know more.
Best wishes
Chris
