Hi Sandra 01353, I stopped eating all process carbs, plenty organic fruits and veggies. Stopped gaining even lost a few pounds. Gained about 20 lbs on normal diet. Hope that helps. Hang in there!

Cut your carbohydrate intake drastically - it has helped a lot of us avoid weight gain on pred and even lose pred-assocaited weight. When you cut the carbs it also helps the craving for food. Pred changes the way your body processes carbs and also causes your liver to release glucose - which in turn triggers insulin to be secreted. That reduces the blood sugar rapidly and it often overshoots, your blood sugar levels falls too low and makes you want carbs to bring it back up. By reducing carbs you reduce these swings in blood sugar, and reduce the amount of insulin as well. It is insulin in combination with the pred that makes your body store any excess sugar as fat, especially around your waist, face and on the back of your neck.

Very nicely said EileenH, one more thing, I have a tendency to drink too much water which brings my sodium levels too low. Just be aware!

Google "How too control weight on steroids" and up will come lots of dietary advice.  The most important thing is to cut down heavily on carbs and sugar.  It's hard but worth it and drink lot of water.  It will work but you have to be disciplined.  Good Luck!
