Best flooring.

This problem will seem very minor compared to those of most people postinghere, but it has been occupying my mind for ages.
I have reasonably bad RA, and have suffered quite a lot of permanent joint damage, and take Methotrexate and Simponee. I want to get new flooring, but am undecided about the best type to bet.
I have carpet and am sick and tired of the effort it takes to keep it looking good - I should add that I don't, and as a result my carpet looks truly, truly horrible.
I had thought about getting vinyl planking as i was told that it had more, I suppose, bouncablility in case of a fall than wooden floors, but provided an easily cared for surface and is reasonably non-skid. However, I am coming around to thinking that carpet, with a really good underfelt may be a better solution in the long run, and, that I could pay for professional cleaning 3/4 times a years. There probably isn't all that much difference in cost.
Obviously, my main consideration is what provides the most secure walking surface and which is better in case of a fall. Can anybody provide me with the own experiences, please?

Me personally I would rather have carpet. I have a terrible time trying to do any cleaning around my house because of lower back pain due to arthritis as well as other conditions. And I think you're going to find that when you have a floor every little crumb and grain of dirt shows up immediately and you'll feel it on your bare feet. Carpet does not show the dirt nearly as quickly as a floor does. I think you will find yourself having to sweep a floor many more times than you have to run the vacuum over your carpet. And frankly if I'm going to fall I would rather fall on a carpeted surface. And unless you're like me with two left feet you're not likely to slip on carpet like you would on the floor.

I agree with amkoffee, carpet is much nicer to walk on & warmer in the winter too. If necessary, you could get carpet tiles, you could then change any tile that became damaged. A professional cleaner a couple of times a year, would put you mind at rest too.
It would drive me potty walking on 'bits'.

My Christmas present was an iRobot - a robot vacuum cleaner which does it all on its own! I'm waiting for the version that srubs hard floors too. I have a bottom of the range Roomba and I am amazed at how much difference it makes to the large rug I have in the living room - and I also find it means there is less dust in the rest of the room judging by the base of the TV which is usually covered in dust (I'm no domestic goddess!!!!)
Not sure which is better in the context of falls - but I can say that hard floors are FAR easier to keep clean even without my iRobot. I have a "duster" sort of mop, a fleece basically, and it doesn't hurt my back at all, I just swish it across any bits to put them to the side altogether before using a vacuum to pick them up. Two or 3 minutes with a vacuum of any sort is all I can manage and both back and hands protest. Nothing sticks to hard floors like it does to carpet, spilled drinks don't sink in and stain, you can drop kitchen roll or a cloth over it and clear it up easily. Nothing would induce me to go back to carpet now.

PS - I llive in the mountains in Italy - winter means minus temperatures all day and the wood floors aren't cold.
