Fish and boneless skinless chicken as well as eggs are my primary protein sources. The Davita web site Jane mentioned has lots of renal friendly recipes. It also identifies a list of about 13 best goods for persons with chronic kidney disease. These goods really help support remaining renal function some.

My kidney doctor stresses to me that the key thing to avoid is too much protein.  She advises to have protein every day.  Basically use any source I want.  Be it chicken, beef, eggs, even already prepared foods.  But just keep track of my protein and to not go over the daily limit for an adult male. this is .36 grams per pound.  I am about 180 so this means 65 grams per day.  But she says if one day I happen to hit 70 grams, don't go into panic mode.  Just don't make it a habit.  The salt intake she tells me I should do much the same.  Follow the daily recommended amounts.  She does NOT want a salt free diet as this would lower my blood pressure to extreme and this is harmful, not to mention dangerous (fainting, heart, etc.).  Now, I am stage 3b.  I have no idea is this would still apply for stage 4.  And I would think another influence would be if your husband is lowing protein currently into his urine or not.

Thank you for your input very much appreciated he had sepsis which attacked his kidneys about 5 years ago my husband was a fit as a flea so it's been a real shock to his system all this ! He loved a pint and a steak in the past so he gets a bit grouchy having his protein limited the dietician has been pretty ineffectual so I try to get as much as info as possible reading up on dietary advice !!

      Thank you again !!!👍

Low sodium (salt) – helps with swelling in the hands and legs

Lots of fresh fruit and vegetables – fiber such as whole grains, fruits and vegetables can help lower total and LDL cholesterol

Low fat (1% or skim) dairy products

Lean cuts of meat, less red meat, more chicken and fish

SOMETIMES fluids should be restricted, as determined by a nephrologist

SOMETIMES protein levels should be increased or decreased, as determined by a nephrologist

RARELY should potassium or phosphorous be restricted, only if kidneys are failing and as determined by a nephrologist

copied; but I hope its helpful. Less red meat for protien.

I would suggest your husband get his diet from his nephrologists. I think Rick said he gets like 63 mg of protein a day, I get 48. Some people get 2000 of sodium, I get 1500. I eat red meat instead of fish because fish is higher in protein. He should get his intake limets of food and liquid before writing out his diet. Like Rick said, just stay under those limets whether you cook from scratch or by prepared food. I cook because the prepared foods seem to be high on everything but on days when I am just dragging but know I have to eat I do eat prepared meals. I just don't get much food. I have the renal diet, diabetic diet, low salt and low cholesterol so I don't  look forward to mealtime anyway. What I do is cheat from time to time just to keep myself sane. Pie at thanksgiving, cake at Christmas and for my 3 sons birthdays.  I also have cream in my coffee every morning, I've been drinking a cup of coffee every morning since my first day in college so I plan to keep drinking it till the day I die. I'm 63. I just count everything and stay within limets. We don't all have the same diet even if we are at the same stage because we have different lab results and some of us have different illnesses, like mine changes sometimes because I also have Lupus. If he can't take the temptation of having certain foods at home that he can't have, don't buy it, treat yourself and the kids to some good food when you spend time outside the home without your husband.
