Best footwear after TKR?

Posted , 24 users are following.

Hi everyone.

im due to have a TKR in 3 weeks and I have to get some new footwear as I have a lot of slip one which I don't think are suitable.  What's the best to get - any recommendations would be appreciated.  Also clothing - are jogging bottoms ok or something looser?

My foot was swollen terribly for months after the operation.  I couldn't get any shoes at all on.  Not even elasticated slip ons.  I found by far the best was a pair of 'Jesus' type sandals.  Ones you can adjust with the velcro straps, and they had magnetic catches (as opposed to velcro), which made putting them on and taking them off very easy.

Hi sue yeh get some joggers lol. I swore I would never wear joggers but I got 2 pairs and I LOVE them. Dont know if you live in England but I got mine from matalan a lovely pink col and oatmeal they team well with tees and are ex comfy to wear.JUST be aware that if you buy footwear now they may not fit after cos my foot was soooo swollen I had to buy another pair on sat half a size bigger!! I got good slippers and wore those til the swelling went down or get something roomy I bought slip on pumps comfy and sturdy. DONT worry ul soon be like me looking like someone from the jeremy kyle show lol lol good luck x x

Haha I too am like Andrea. I haven't worn anything other than tracksuit bottoms since I had my TKR. They are comfy and also good for physio as I can roll up the leg easily.

I wear trainers too as they give a good stable support. My slippers are just ballet pump type ones (only £5 from supermarket). They are easy to put on without having to bend to fix. Definitely need something with a back on and no heal. I was amazed how many people in hospital had backless slippers and shoes with a heal. Physiotherapists were not happy!!

Whilst in hospital I was able to wear pjs too. I had taken mostly nightshirts but it was lovely to be able to wear a wide legged pj...removes the fear of flashing. Best to take a nightie for ease after surgery though.

    Good luck x

Yoga pants all the way for me! I am 7 weeks post op and while I do now where jeans etc when I go out, around the house the yoga pants rule - comfy and stretchy for exercise purposes.  I wear FitFlops all the time around the house and often outside too. Although the info sheet said slippers with backs nobody actually had any problem with me either having bare feet, wearing the FitFlops or a pair of trainers....so I would say see how you go u less you are desperate for new slippers.

I found flat trainers were the most comfortable. Asics with the 'heel drop of 10cm' which I USED to run in are so comfortable. I then moved onto Clarks flat shoes, again theyre comfortable

Jogging bottoms are fine when you are at home recovering. However I found a skirt or cropped trousers were better in hospital so that they could examine my knee, put ice on it etc. As for shoes I bought full slippers and canvas slip on shoes  in larger sizes before I had my 1st op but didn't need them - I ended up returning them. I managed with backless slippers after both ops. Canvas slip on shoes/trainers are ideal for exercising afterwards.

Hope all goes well for you.

I almost always wore flip-flops (not sure what you call them in the UK, but the slip-ons that go between your toes). I brought them to the hospital and they worked just fine when they tortured me with those walks down the halls. I needed something that was easy to take on and off. As others are talking about pants I will too. The softer the better, 6 months later, I still find my scar sensative to certain fabrics.

Hi. Bought myself some sketchers that you slip on but like trainers with memory foam.   They are so comfortable and look good with joggers snd Jeans.  I have ballet type slippers too as easy to get on and off.  I normally wear flip flops but find it puts more pressure on knee to keep them on, so best with a shoe for a while.

Thanks guys, all very helpful.  I am in the uk and they said slippers with a back - I always wear the flip flop type sandals now but I didn't think they would be suitable afterwards.
