Best medication for PTSD?

Hi guys,

I've been battling severe PTSD symptoms for years and I used to be against medication which is why I waited so long before I tried some for the first time 1.5 months ago.

I've been taking Zoloft 100mg for a couple of weeks now and I don't feel anything, no side effects or any positive effects what so ever.

It's honestly like taking water, is it possible for a medication like this to do nothing at all? I'll be going on the max dose possible which is 200mg since I have no side effects, I'm assuming the dose is just too small.

What are some known good medications for treating PTSD? I do NOT have depression or panic attacks (although I do have ''sleeping-walking'' panic attacks, I freak out in the middle of the night).

What I struggle with is paranoia, hypervigilence, jumpiness, extreme sensitivity to loud sudden noises which causes rage (like a door slamming shut), anti-social behavior, anger/rage, etc. These are the symptoms I'm trying to manage.

I forgot to mention extreme dissociation/depersonalization, I feel like nothing is real, life isn't real, etc.

You seem to be on the correct type of medication, If your Doctor has recommended using 200mg go for it.

It may be your body is not showing any positive signs as yet, you will need to give the drug time to work, upwards of 5/6 weeks, If you are not getting side effects do not knock it, many on Here would love that Lol

Thanks for your reply borderriever : )

Yeah I guess I lucked out on this one lol so far I've had no side effects!

I did my research and suggested I start with Zoloft to my doctor and she agreed, then gave me the prescription for it.

I'll be going on 200mg possibly next week and I'll try that for a while.. if it still does nothing then I'll try Respiredone (it was suggested by a psychiatrist).

Do some research with what you have been diagnosed with. There are many different antidepressants. Some work for one while not for another. Everyone is different. I've taken Paxil, zoloft and now Prozac. Some take 5 different ones and they get side effects and stop taking them until you find the right one. If you at any point don't feel right on a med then don't take it or it will be harder to get off causing withdrawal (I'm talking taking it for 4 months plus) I would give the med 6 weeks like you have. If you don't feel any change to help you then you should try something else. Who knows you may need an antipsychotic med if your symptoms are too overwhelming.

I've done some research which is why I decided to go with Zoloft (I'm the one who suggested it to my doctor and she gave me the prescription lol). I want to see other people's experiences, I understand everyone's different though..

I may have to legit go on an antipsychotic as a psychiatrist advised me to take Risperidone a few months back, but I had refused because I thought my symptoms would go away on their own (it's been years and they haven't), I'm probably going to go try those next if Zoloft 200mg does nothing!

My symptoms are extremely severe and I feel extremely out of touch with reality and people around me although it's been that way for so long that I just roll with it lol

prozac, and effexor have also been used to treat this.  i had the best luck with low dose prozac. stay with it for about a month to start gettng better. if you take too many miligrams..... you might get kind of hazed out. that's why 20-40 helped me........

Oh I forgot to mention I don't care if I get kind of hazed out, I would rather feel high and numb then to feel my current symptoms so it's all good.

Hey there!  Now that some time has gone by...I'm just curious what route you took?  Did the Zoloft work best?  Have you tried anything different since this discussion? I'm currently suffering from PTSD along with anxiety/panic attacks.  I was prescribed lexapro but when researching, I don't care for the side effects.  Any input would be much appreciated!  Thank you!
