The only effective way to get a true reading is through a blood serum test or a Urine Analysis, which will show usually crystals in the urine. Other than that, I just do a simple urine strip test to make sure my urine isn't too acidic which will cause gout attacks.

First of allare you male or female? While it is fashionable to think there's no difference, when it comes to gout and hyperuricemia there is, as what's normal is different.
Second there's a difference between hyperuricemia and gout (a symptom of hyperuricemia), and then there's how you measure it. Hyperuricemia is measured through a blood test. However gout is only really measured by taking liquid from an infected joint (which rarely happens).
Finally what are your symptoms which took you to the doc? Furthermore how old are you, as what is normal varies with age. Also advice would vary with age (a 93 year old sufferer has different needs over say a 26 year old).

Hello,
Thanks for your reply, I'm male 46 year old.
I have never had any symptoms, was only during the routine tests that my Uric Acid showed "high", according to my GP, but how high is too high? both my liver and kidney are functioning normal.
I use the home kit to measure the blood and the results keep changing from one day to the other, one morning it says 6.1 and one morning 7.1.
Many Thanks

A reading of 7.0 for a *male* is most accurately described as within normal limits.
Too high is 7.1 and above. However with marginal figures it's best to test a couple of weeks later to check. Also the blood urate test you should not drink liquids for 4 hours before the test.
I woukd think that the best thing to do is test again in 6 months.
The best thing you can do to lower blood urate is drink a little more water, do more exercise, get to a good weight, and cut out sugar and high fructose corn sirop. You may never get gout.
I have read that these home test kits are not accurate when compared to the pukka medical test.

I'm in the market for a Uric Acid Test Kit that uses your blood. I read some reviews on the device that it might be as accurate as an actual blood test through your doctor. What brand of Test kit do you have and do you like it?
Amazon only has one on stock right now and it the yellow device by UA Sure. Also does any one know what a FLEX Plan is and if this device is covered?
