Best way to live with arthritis

I have arthritis in my right thumb joint which can be quite painful. My question is: if I do an activity that actually hurts it (like knitting/embroidery/handwriting) does that do damage to the joint and make things worse? I really really don't want to give up those hobbies but don't want to make things much worse. I've had one steroid injection which was fairly effective but only for a few months.

this is a issue only you can find the answer. i have arthritis in thumbs for many years after trying steroid injections no help, wrist thumb braces, ...you name it .. i had to find what would in the end give me peace. i stopped doing what aggravated the thumbs. gave it all up and found something else i could do without long term risk for surgery or worse.

Gosh, that's hard… such a lot to give up… I think I'd need to be absolutely sure that using that joint actually makes it worse than simple day-to-day activities do, before I give up everything! I'll think about it. One hobby (playing an instrument) is a group activity so it would cut down on my social life too. And can you tell me what's "worse" than surgery? That sounds bad enough!
