Betahistine and antihistamines

Hi everyone.
My son who has bilateral Menieres Disease, is having a bit of a rough time of it lately. He's now just getting over the winter coughs and colds and now the hayfever seasons has kicked which is not helping with his Menieres.
We've been told that he cannot take antihistamines while on Betahistine as the antihistamine will stop the Betahistine working. He takes 96mg x 3 times a day, plus asthma medication.
Does anyone on here take both, as the natural remedies are not working at all at the moment? If so, what ones are you able to take with the Betahistine?
Many thanks for your time in reading this.

hI Julie. You are correct. Patient should not take antihistimine with betahistine. Antihistimine will negate the effect of the betahistine. Your son can take Flonase (is that sold in your pharmacy?). Flonase is a steroid and not antihistine and should be helpful for allergy symptoms. By the way...96 mg of betahistine three times/day is quite a lot. Was that amount prescribed by his ENT? Has your son seen an ENT who specializes in ear diseases? Also there is a definite connection between allergy and MD for many patients. Has your son seen an allergist?
fyi...I take betahistine (12mg three times/day) and Flonase.
Another thing that might be helpful in relieving your son's MD symptons is Ativan (sedative) that calms inner ear flairups. It works well for me. GOOD LUCK!

Hi there,
Thanks or getting back to me. My son has just started on a nasal spray and that seems to be helping slightly. He's also taking Pollanase now, a natural hayfever remedy which also helps a bit.
My son has been under the hospital for the last 5/6 years for his Menieres's and the ENT consultant recommended he take up to 96mg three times a day. I have also read research of people taking significantly higher doses of it too.
He has also recently in the last 18 months developed a nut allergy, so we have seen the allergy specialists for that and unfortunately pollen was one of the things that he had a big reaction to, along with the nuts, when he had the allergy tests done.
I'm not sure if he was prescribed Ativan at the beginning of his symptoms, he's tried so many things but I'll have a look back on his records to check.
Thank you once again for your reply as it's interesting to know other people's views and successes, as Menieres Disease is not any easy journey to be on. Good luck and hope things keep going well for you.
