hi

i recentley been reading a lot about these so bought some to try. here is why. all the men in my family have alyways suffered from heartburn etc. and we have always pretty much eaten Rennies and antacid daily. i decided to go to my docs once and was told i have high acid and that i need to take PPI Protien Pump Inhibitors. 2 years ago i got the worst bloating ever and then 2 days later i found an umbilical hernia. related im not sure. however since then ive bloated and had pain after i eat and almost constant constipation. qulity of life for the last 2 years has been terrible. i had the operation for the hernia 6 months ago and since then its been even worse. i read that it is more likley that i would have low staomach acid which causes digestive upset etc, and that taking PPI would pretty much finish off all stomach acid production. so i decied to stop these and try increasing my acid with Betaine HCL pills. for the first 4 days i fellt like i had been cured and that i had so much energy. but the other day the bloat came back and i feel poo again. i have pretty much every symptom of low stomach acid and i tried the bicarbonate of soda test 3 mornings in a row. mix with water and and drink if no burp in 5 mins it is liley you have low acid. anyway. my doc never tests me and just say IBS IBS. which i read is a covering term for many stomach issues. but i need to get to the bottom of it as i cant go on like this. there is no point i have no life anymore. please if anyone has and ideas please reply to me. thanks in advance

I've had most if the same problems you are having. I had my gall bladder out in 2012. I have low acid! The doctors can't find what's really wrong so they say I have IBS-C. Which turns into D quite often. I sit up most nights because of heartburn , back pain and stomach pain. I feel horrible at times, can't trust myself to go out and not have to run to the potty. Been on 2 different PPI not sure they even work at this point. Been on them for 7 years now. I had reflux before G Bladder removal. Haven't tried the supplements your going to try. Would be interested in how the work for you.

i have read so may articles stating that PPI should only be a short term use. 6 weeks few months only. and that they stop acid production in the stomach so food is not broken down. i feel like a zombie and i no longer go out. i have to find the answer cus my doc could care less

I know they are for short term. Every time I try to stop them my reflex is so bad I have to go back on them. My dr feels the harm from reflex outweighs the PPL. I've had a TIF band done to give my esophagus less room , so the reflex doesn't come up into my throat. So I'm stuck right now taking them, which I hate.

You are all correct in your beliefs stop taking PPI's it's going to be bad for a while but it'll get better and do it another way these doctors had no idea when they threw people on them long term what they were going to do we deeper and you will be alarmed at what you find from staying on them too long. There's going to be a class action lawsuit sooner or later about how the damage that they have caused. It's just the new craze in pills that you're making money off of and they won't admit what is causing that's why they talk everything up to ideas like you said there is no diagnosis of IBS is a catch-all phrase for we don't know what the hell we're doing and don't try hard enough to figure it out

so guys here is an update.

ive been on PPI drugs for 2 years poss more. after much research i found that my stomach acid was actually to low. look up "hypochlorhydria" so my doctor as usual just perscribed me some pills. no questions asked. over the last 2 years ive become sicker and sicker. to the point where i wanted to end it as i couldnt eat or go to the toilet normally. i asked my doc over and over again for help he would just call it IBS and give me more drugs to take, well i came across the fact that my stomach acid was problably to low. so i took a simple home test of mixing ¼ teaspoon of Bicarbonate of soda in 6 floz of water. drink it first thing in the morning before anything else. if you burp a fair bit within 2 to 3 mins you have good acid. if you dont burp in 5 mins then stop timing you prob have low acid. repeat this for 3 mornings to make sure. with this im mind i found that you can try apple cider vinager or a product called Bentaine HCL pills. i tried the pills and found that after 7 days i felt almost normal and the 15 ish horrible health issues i had in the last 2 years were going away bit by bit. but most off all now horrible pain after eaitng and painful bloating. i also read that the lack of stomach acid wll allow bad bacteria to overgrow in the intestines. SIBO small intestianal overgrowth. with this in mine i now take 1 or 2 pills with meals and a very high quality probiotic in the morning and so far im feeling like i used to before the Ompeperazole. you dont have to stay on Betaine HCl forever as eventually your stomach should kick start its own profuction of acid again. when it does you will find that the pills cause heavy burning feeling in your stomach. so  then you just stop all together. i have also started going to the toilet normally and no longer get badly constipated and no longer see undigested food in my stools. i did get heartburn after stopping the pills but to stop that i just take ¼ teasppoon of bicarb with 6 floz of water that stops it. it also worth noting that the symptoms of high stomach acid and low are the same and it is more likley to be low as hyperchlorhydria is extrmley rare. its been 9 days and i feel wonderful. so much more evenergy too ad now im asborbing nutrients normally. and i was getting depression and aniexty caused by lack of nutrients this is also going away. ill post again in the long term. but in the meantime. i would suggest stopping PPI pill and try the home test see which you are
