Betmiga prescribed for bladder spasm post urolift

Hi all,

It's now 9 months since my urolift. Had 3 clips put in and big improvement to my flow and water retention. Only problem being that when my bladder fills up and I hold it for a bit longer than I should I experience a spasm, I have some control over it because I have reasonable core strength.. even so when it happens I have to empty my bladder promptly and can even get a small leak.

My Urologist has prescribed a 3 month course of Betmiga 50mg, and I am reluctant to take it because of the negative experience I had with Duodart (loss of libido, retrograde ejaculation) . I know the Betmiga is a different type of drug to Duodart, but as usual when you read the information brochure on the drug it lists some potentialy very nasty side effects.

Any info or sharing of your experience will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance - Simon

    Good evening

There are other things they can give you. Ask your Urologist. Tell the doctor you don't want to take that medication because of the side effects

If he does not what to change it you may just have to go sooner

    Take care...Ken

Disclaimer: I am not a doctor and have no medical training.

I am not familiar with Betmiga but a quick internet search says it's a bladder spasm medication. I was on oxybutinen for bladder spasms for 20 years until I had a TURP. The only side-effect was dry mouth for an hour or two after I took a pill. Since Betmiga works on the bladder and not the prostate, there's no reason to believe it would have the same side-effects as Duodart.

FWIW, my wife's gastroenterologist told her than when a clinical study is performed, any side-effect that a recipient experiences has to be listed as a possible side-effect, regardless of whether it was from the drug being studied or not. I believe most side-effects go away once a drug is discontinued. Given your issue, it seems like it would be worth a try. Only you can decide if the side-effects (if any) are acceptable vs whatever improvement you experience in your symptoms.

    hi Simon,

sounds similar to me, i had urolift 9 months ago and have struggling since with a sensitive bladder. I get really strong urges at time and leak a bit. I also have days where i cant hold on at all and the frequency is back to several times in a couple of hours including having to go shortly after i just went e.g. 15-30 minutes later.

    i

have had weeks and even up to 3 months were all seemed resolved. however i put this down to having botox injection in the bladdder 9 months ago and i was on betmiga for 3 months.

now all that has worn off i seemed to have gone backwards a bit in the last few weeks. seeing urologist today and hoping he can explain and resolve this. there are no side effects from the betmiga. how are things for you now?

      Hi Nick,

Thanks for sharing your experience. I have not taken the Betmiga yet even though I was prescribed it 3 months ago. Reason for not starting is that at the same time I was prescribed a new med for cholesterol and I did not want to start 2 new meds simultaneously, and I didnt want to risk complications in a lockdown due C19 virus.

My spasm symptoms have improved a bit, but will probably start Betmiga when the winter here in Australia is over. I only really get the spasm when my bladder is really full and also can get a small leak. One thing I have noticed is that I can control the spasm somewhat by flexing my abdominal core muscles which are in reasonable shape due to exercise. Not sure what your fitness level is, for info on core exercises check out youtube. Apart from that every thing else seems ok. Good luck with it.

      Cheers Simon.

      hey Simon,

sounds like you are doing well under the circumstances. I am also in Australia. after seeing urologist i had another round of botox and he thinks i have interstitial cystitis which i never had before the so called no side effect urolift. its become a huge regret as he said this may resolve in next 6 months but commonly takes years and the treatment for it is Botox. only lasts 6 months and cost me $1500 each time.

hoping not as I dont have any of the pain symptoms usually associated with IC.

yeah im fit not overweight regular gym goer, i will try the ab core contractions

      thanks for tip

      Hi Nick,

Sorry to hear about the IC problem.. I had not heard about it so just read up on it, and it does not sound good. I'm assuming my spasms aren't IC as my Urologist didn't mention it... however he's one of those guys that not very communicative.

I have not taken the Betmiga yet; my spasms only seem to hit me when my bladder is really full so I usually make sure I take a pee before going out anywhere and refrain from drinking a lot of liquid. As mentioned when I get one I can shut it down with core flexing...

Its been a tough winter and I just did not want to take another med with all the C19 dramas at the moment. Thinking I will do the three month Betmiga course as soon as the weather warms up and my head is in a better space to deal with any side effects (I'm still wondering how I put up with duodart for 18 months. ..horrible stuff)

Good luck and best wishes for nailing that IC .. cheers mate - Simon
