Betnovate for vaginal/vulval dryness
Posted , 12 users are following.
20 years post early menopause, I've had very itchy vagina/vulva for last month. I tried self help for thrush, didn't help. I saw female GP today who diagnosed extreme dryness due to menopause. She prescribed Betnovate to use on outer areas. On carefully reading the leaflet it stated quite clearly not to use on "private parts" which is what is was prescribed for! Anyone else come across this? Should I not use it and talk to GP or pharmacist ?

I googled and came up with this as a problem Betnovate is appropriate for "skin disorder causing a flat, itchy, violet rash, usually on the wrists, shins, lower back and genitals (lichen planus)". It also said prolonged use can cause thinning of the skin which would be counterproductive for AV. Sounds as though your doctor may think you have lichen planus.
That info was on netdoctor. There are others you should check out.

Betnovate is perfectly fine for use on external vulval areas. It is not rocommended for insertion and only use a tiny amount but it's fine and works well. I use it myself on prescription and have progressed from using it every day to only usin it PRN. You'll probably find that the steroid content is very low mine is 0.1%
