    Hi Caroline,

i think this all depends on your consultant and whether their approach allows side sleeping.  Unfortunately my consultant will not allow use of the pillow until after 12 weeks.  You are better to check with the hospital or the physio department on what your particular consultants instructions are.  I have seen them advertised on Amazon and EBay.

Hello Caroline 10 week post hippy here. I was told to stay on back for 8 weeks but encouraged to place an ordinary pillow under knees to protect the heels from sores - worked a treat. Survived the 8 weeks and now enjoying sleeping normally. Well not sleeping but at least being able to toss and turn. Had drug review at GP yesterday and now I am off all pain killers he has given me lightweight sleeping pills to try and reestabli

Hi Caroline, three weeks today since Ihad my RTHR.  My surgeon gave no advice about sleeping positions but in my book of Post Op Physio it said it was okay to sleep on the unoperated side as long as there were two pillows between your legs to support the operated leg. I just used one thck one.  I slept on my side from day one and found it so much more comfortable that trying to sleep on my back. Of course, being very careful when turning over.  Now three weeks on I am sleeping on my stomach, my prefered sleeping position.  Still have the pillow in the bed to support my leg if I need it.   I'm now walking around indoors rarely using a stick or a crutch and today for the first time I took my dogs for a short walk on the common (using to crutches just for safety). There seems to be lots of differing opinions and I suppose the best advice would be to just be careful.

The nurses showed me how to put 2 pillows between my legs and how to turn onto my non-operated side. I could only tolerate about 30mins initially but now I'm 8wks and I still use the pillows and sleep mostly on my side now. I guess whatever you find comfortable x

I have a little pillow to put between my knees. Don't have it there for long though.  I think it is more to stop crossing legs in bed. Probably why I can't sleep as would normally lay on left side and right leg would cross it.  So I got a small 'dress' pillow to lay next to leg to stop me doing this.

hi caroline ... my ideal pillow would be one of those body-bolster pillows - full lenght so I can hug it ... but I can't find one here in Holland - I also was shown in the hospital how to put a regular pillow between my knees and how to turn over on my non operated side ... the one Ron shows however looks more sturdy - amazing how different the instructions are ...from 6-8 weeks on back and on side almost right away ... confusing ...

Hi Caroline, I have used a body pillow for a few years as I have had two arthroscopies and a hip replacement and will be having a knee replacement in July. I use it under my knees when lying on my back and between my knees and along my body when lying on my side, unoperated side at first but now (six months later) I can lie on my operated side. I got mine from dunelms which you can get on line if you don't have one locally. Hope this helps. Valerie
