BHP-HoLEP recovery - how do I cure the incontinence??

Posted , 10 users are following.

Hi, I had my HoLEP surgery last December 2018 and i have benefited from much improved flow and general bladder control - no urgency to pee, no hesitation, no atop/start etc

However my biggest problem is continued incontinence since the operation despite continual pelvic floor exercises to tighten the muscle . There is no doubt that the situation has improved, but i seem to have reached a plateau and i can not yet abandon the pads! It is fine if i am seated or laying down but as i walk, i get a small amount of leakage . It's now getting a bit depressing if I'm honest and my quality of life is suffering because of the problem .

is there anyone else out there who having had the procedure has the same issue?

i will see my consultant in March 2020 and i am hoping that may be addition surgery that could fix the problem. any thoughts or advice would be welcome

Hi, sorry to hear of your situation.

Did you have any incontinence before you had the HoLEP?

I'm also wondering how many procedures did your Doc do before he treated you? I am asking because I am considering having a HoLEP and have an appointment with a new (to me) Urologist in mid-January.

Hi Barry, no incontinence before the HoLEP - but i was of course suffering from all the symptoms of an enlarged prostate . Thankfully, mine was benign.

Would I recommend the procedure? the answer has to be yes as it removed all my previous issues. just need to cure this incontinence now.

Good luck and i hope you feel positive enough to go ahead

I'm sorry but thats way beyond my medical knowledge!! mine was measured at 128ml and was described by my consultant as 'very large'

i had the procedure done in November 2017 and felt the inconvenience of leakage for a few weeks. it subsided after that until I felt in control again. i hope things improve for you as well.

There is biofeedback equipment that can help pinpoint where you need to focus on to control this. If your doc doesn't have it - I'd recommend finding one that does.

This is a cautionary tale for those who rush to full blown surgeries for simple BPH. While this is a rare complication, there are procedures that virtually never leave side effects like this. Generally it's best to try those first - you can always do surgery if they don't work.

Thanks for this post. Can you direct me to where I can find out more about the biofeedback equipment and it's process?

I posted a url - not sure if the moderators will allow it. If not, Google "biofeedback incontinence" and you'll find plenty of links

    Clive,

My father had the old style monopolar TURP in 1990. That was all that was available then. He said he had incontinence for a year after that, and then it cleared up. He lived until 2015.
