Bi lateral hip Operation next Tuesday

Posted , 9 users are following.

Hello all, what an inspiring sight this is. I am due for my double hip -Op next week and my surgeon is using Ceramic on Polyethylene mix.? I heard ceramic on ceramic can have an after effect of squeaking which has been the case with my partner. Does anyone know of the side effects or at least post op effects with the ceramic/ Poly combination. Lastly, I would love any advice on best ways of managing recovery with two hips sensitive and healing at the same time.

I wish I had an answer for you.  I've had both hips replaced, but not at the same time.  Mine were metal.  I've never heard of Ceramic on Polyethylene replacements.  I assume your suregon knows what he is doing, but having home P. T. then P.T at the p.t. office helped a lot, but,  I can't image having both done at the same time.  My recovery  for each hip took about six weeks and I had to work hard to get back to where I could go back to work.   Good luck and I hope you do O.K. with having both done at the same time.

I had a plastic head of my left radius(elbow) done about 30 years ago (so that is plastic on bone) It used to squeak and my children and their friends loved it! Never bothered me but it stopped squeaking quite a few years ago so my party trick came to an end.

But as for your hip. You have to have confidence in your surgeon and take his advice in my opinion.

    Hope it goes well.

      Hi Mike,

I had bilateral hip replacements done almost 6 weeks ago...ceramic with polyethylene liner. I'm doing quite well, no crutches or aids anymore and driving. My doc said they should last 30 years if not longer and no squeaking. The first two weeks are hard and you'll rely on your walker plus will need help but afterwards it gets better every day. So glad I got both done at the same time! smileKim

Hi jen,  warm welcome to this wonderful hippies forum ... I don't really know the answer to your question - the way I understand it is that popping or squeeking sensation is part of the healing process and will disappear over time ...how long ago did your partner had the surgery? was this ever explained ? there are many bi-lateral post-op hippies on this forum and  I hope they'll see your post and share their experience with you .. I had 2 THR surgeries 6 months apart , so not the same ... please come back here if you have more questions or concerns okay  big warm hugrenee

    Dear Jen,

i cant help you will the double hip op but I have my left hip replaced with a ceramic ball joint in an plastic cup. I've had no problems with it. Very best wishes and don't worry too much. Just take each day at a time, expect your recovery to take time and there will be a few niggles on the way but 2 years on from my op I am better than I've ever been and I feel 10 years younger.

    good luck and best wishes,

    betty

    Hey Jen,

I had both hips done 10 weeks ago. Ceramic on plastic. Posterior approach. Non cemented. Not sure of side effects, but the track record for these are not as long as metal on metal. I'm very happy so far. No arthritis pain. Just a lot of stiffness I'm trying to overcome. I agree with one of the other posters in that the first two weeks are toughest. You'll notice daily improvement for a while, graduating to weekly improvement after maybe 8 weeks. For me, a walker for 4 weeks, canes for maybe 2 weeks, then unassisted walking. IMHO persistence is key. You'll do great I'm sure.
