Bi Lateral hip replacement May 2014

Posted , 7 users are following.

Hi all first time on this forum.I had both hips replaced at the same time after having a spinal block. The opp. went very well and i was on my feet and walking with the aid of crutches within 24hrs. initially i did as i was told with the exercises and made good progress.Pain was there but manageable with the cocktail of drugs.Back driving after 6 weeks back to work after 7. Big mistake with hindsight should have taken longer of work.Pain at the top of the femur around the wound at times excruciating but now 6mts. down the line getting better. Also stopped exercises again big mistake need to keep going.Anybody out there uming and rring abot opp. i would say go for it but listen to the experts.

    Hi Edward

Welcome to the forum.......You are brave having both done together.....glad everthing worked out well.

I've had both done but not togetherbiggrin

I agree with you....you need more time than that off work.

As for exercise.....keep on. As you say listen to the experts.

My 2nd one went oK but four weeks post op i fractured my greater trochater bone doing an NHS exercise.......but I want to emphasis that the THR went oK it was osteoporosis that cause the bone to fracture so easily.....so 10 months later I'm still on 2 crutches.

I still do exercises......crutches or notcheesygrin   I've been to the gym today......Healthy life, where certain days instructors are there to keep an eye on people with illness.

Tomorrow is yoga with Arthritis Care LOL  no standing on my head or wrapping my legs round my neck but at least its movement.

So I'm all for exercise after surgery....no matter what kind....as long as the experts agree with it.  My main problem in the gym is where to put the blinkin' crutch when I move to different machinescheesygrin

Good Luck everyone having a THR

Hi. I hope your health continues to improve and am glad to hear you're talking things more easy.

Sometimes, on this board, I find myself astounded by the expectations of people, in terms of the rate and level of recovery.

I just don't understand it, when all the necessary information is easily accessible and hospitals give clear and strong guidelines.

These are major operations and not to be messed with or sabotaged.

Perhaps some of my incredulity is down to my own horrendous experience with my first two THRs: 7 years later, I'm still disabled by them.

I would urge people to take it slowly and carefully, err on the side of caution: our bodies are precious, not to be abused through delusions of 'superpowers'.

    Hi Edward

I had both mine done in July, and I'm going back to work on a phased return on Monday (18 weeks). I was able to drive at 6 weeks, but I can't imagine for 1 minute how you could have managed work at 7 weeks. You are one tough fella that's for sure.

To be honest I'm well ready now and looking forward to it. Fortunately I have had no pressure to get back, and that is the way it should be after what we've gone through. I've managed to get in the gym everyday building up the thigh muscles and can now run upstairs, but at 7 weeks now way Jose. Hopefully you can get some rest and things will settle down a bit for you.

    Best Wishes

HI Briles I was really shocked to read you can run up the stairs. I had my op last year November 19th.  I can't  even walk up the stairs normally. I still haven't  got the strength in my leg for it to lift me up the step so I step up each stair with my good leg and bring my THR side next to it. I am having physio but not yet noticed any improvement.  I have got nerve damage  from the op so don't  know  if  that  is  why the  strength  isn't  there. You are  probably  right going  back  to  work  after  18 weeks.  I think  it  takes  that  long  to get back  to  feeling  normal.

      Hi Debbie

Sorry to hear about your difficulties.

I think you're probably right about the nerve damage being the cause. It certainly is in my case and that's 7 years on.

It's very difficult for people to understand, unless they've experienced it, don't you think?

      Good luck

Hi edward62423uk, I tip my hat to you for having the bilateral hip replacement.

    How long was the surgery?

Yeah it was too early to go to work.

Continue your exercises and i think your physiotherapy would assist you with weight training if its possible for you to do.

Hi beachbum surgery was surprisingly short from going down to surgery having opp.then recovery room and back to ward for cup of tea approx. 4.5hrs.Thinking about joining a gym to push exercices to next level. Are you waiting for opp?

No im 4 months post op THR.

The gym is great to start working out, but don't push it too much.

I started out with 10lbs leg extension quads, hamstrings and adducion and abduction and leg presses my favorite.

Now i am up to 30 Lbs quads, 65 lbs hamstring both exercises single leg not both together. Abduction from 10 lbs to 40 ilbs, and adduction from 10 lbs to 40 lbs. Leg presses started with 80lbs up to 260 lbs.

I workout using the triangle pyramid method. I get the burn but not up to muscle failure you don't want that only the burn.

I took off two days because of some business i had to take care of, but will resume back on Monday morning. Once i go back to work my gym session would have to be nights.

      So start off light weights.
