Hey there,
I've had one done a couple years ago. I can tell you the healing is Ok.... painful. I thought I was on the road to a good , successful great toe fusion. IN my opinon it is not a success because I'm always in pain, always!
Can't wear anything decent because your toe doesnt bend.
The cold effects it , too. Makes it more painful.
That is my only complaint. Pain.

HI LINDA,
Over the years I have had 2 podiatrists tell me I absolutely needed fusion on my right toe/mtp joint due to arthritis. The recovery of 6 weeks and no driving bothered me. I only wanted my joint cleaned up and the "hill" on top of my foot shaved off so i could wear regular shoes without pain. This past spring I found a very competent podiatrist who said a cheilectomy would be a suitable alternative to fusion. Recovery time 2 weeks. She told me that fusion is totally more long term but the cheilectomy will give me good results for an undetermined number of years. I am extremely happy I did not have a fusion done. My recovery was uneventful and did take approximately 2 weeks. Good luck with your surgery.
