Big toe joint replacement

Posted , 11 users are following.

Saw an orthopaedic consultant yesterday who confirmed, after an xray, that the osteoarthritis in the big toe joint is getting worse. He suggested two different types of surgery: a fusion of the bone or a replacement of the joint. I am leaning towards the latter although I don't know much about it and the consultant admitted the success rate isn't great! Has anyone had it done or know more about it?

Thanks

Graeme

    Hi

Did you have this done in the end? I had it done nearly three weeks ago and am really pleased with my ability to walk!

Having to make myself rest with my foot up as I tend to do too much around the house.

Having to build up strength in my back and right hip from years of walking oddly (outside of my foot)

      Hi,

That's great news that surgery has gone well. I hope your recovery is just as positive. Same to you Loukelly if you're reading too.

I've not had anything done yet. I was recommended getting rollbar rocker style trainers/sneakers (mine are Skechers) and that seems to have helped a lot. It's eased the pain on the joint for the time being but I think it's maybe only delaying rather than postponing the need for an operation.

Keep us posted with developments and good luck!

Hi thanks-overall I made the right decision to have the op as before the pain was horrendous everyday compared to now. Still swells after long walking and doing too much but that's expected at this stage. I was given specialist insoles and I was living in Skechers for minimum 12 months but this didn't help. I didn't want to be relying on pain killers as much as I was too. Keep us updated.

Wow! Prompt reply! Never posted on here before.

I had tried insoles/rocker bottom shoes etc but was finding walking even to the corner shop painful, and driving also: particularly stop-start driving in traffic (right foot problem)

Yes I had the same problem-short distances would be a killer, that's when I knew I had to get something done. Mine's my left foot so traffic can be a pain (literally) sometimes! Have you got fed up yet with not being to do much?!

Yes- single parent with messy teenagers- aargh- and the rain has made the garden look like a jungle!

I imagine left foot pain would be worse for driving as you have to put your foot down further...

Yes I've heard the weather hasn't been great, I'm in Portugal at the mo and it's boiling! It does ache after driving but glad worst is over. When do you have your cast off? Have you got meds?

Got loads of painkillers! Didn't have a cast, just a big bandage for first two weeks. Now down to just a dressing...

I was on morphine and dihydrocodeine. Had withdrawals though as didn't ween myself off!! Pain gets easier with time though. You got any physio booked?

I have strong co-codamol and ibuprofen: down to only couple of times daily. Been once to physio- lovely massage of calf and foot. Trying to do the exercises he told me. Back in 10 days again

I went and was fitted for metal inserts which I wear under the insoles of my shoes. I can use it in gym shoes or in work shoes. It keeps the toe joint from bending too much. It was a life saver until I had the surgery done. And now that I had it done it helps too with limiting the amount of movement in my toe.

Think I was walking too fast in London❌ I need to remember to allow myself time and not try to sprint! Had the painkillers last night but still sore this morn. How you both getting on?

third day back at work, not busy but feeling really tired, and foot was a bit more puffy and sore last night.

Will try and put feet up higher at lunchtime.....

Yeah do try get it up. I'm finding some days worse than others. Lots of walking today for me so gonna be on the painkillers. Wish could ice it 😩

My foot is very swollen also around dinner time. I eat dinner, then get a bag of peas frozen bag, and lay on the couch, with the bag of peas on my foot. It seems to help a bit. Do you walk with a limp? I can't seem to get myself to stop limping. It isn't hurting so much as I am babying that foot when walking. This creates problems with my hips and back so I have to figure out how to stop limping.

I tend to walk with a limp when I have done too much walking around busy cities like today. I was a bit cautious when first started physio but I think it's just going to take a while to get strength back into that foot. This is better than fusion though, I have to keep reminding myself of that

yes true. Put my foot up for a bit at lunchtime, but definitely duskier and sorer if I've been on it. Pounding the pavements of London sounds painful.....

I was walking with a limp pre-op and now having to make myself put full weight through the ball of the foot. Limp more when been on it....I think I need to make myself take more painkillers and try to walk properly!
