Big toe pain after hip replacement

Hi guys
Has anyone had an issue of pain and swelling in their big toe joint after same leg hip replacement?
I had my right hip replaced 5 weeks a go on Monday it’s going well hip wise but a few days after my op I noticed that my big toe was painful and swollen around the joint and slightly red it’s painful to walk on it. I have never had any sort of issues with my toe no bunions or pain of any kind all I can think is that previous to the op I was walking very badly on my foot could I have done something to it? I’m regularly rubbing muscle cream on it heating and icing but it’s not eased off. I see my surgeon in 3 weeks so I could discuss it with him but I wondered if this has happened to anyone else and what the result was.
Thanks for any input much appreciated Lynne

The other posts are probably right as in gout, but it could just be you have strained it with the way you walked prior to your hip replacement.
Can't imagine it's referred pain from your hip op though so go see your GP and either way he can give you something to help it. He can also check your uric acid levels to give you a diagnosis of gout or not.
Glad you are doing ok hip wise though

Since my hip replacement in May 2017, I have learned more about referred pain than I ever wanted to know.
The sciatic nerve is sometimes stretched or pinched during surgery, and this can lead to all sorts of problems. I happen to have foot drop with related pain in my big toe and ankle. You don't need the long version of my tale.
I'd just like to suggest that you may be having some referred pain from the sciatic nerve. This usually recovers in a few weeks to a few months. Since you have an appointment with your surgeon, in the meantime you could try stretching your foot and doing ankle pumps to keep the nerve firing. I've also found that there is an aspirin creme with lidocaine made for feet that can relieve pain for some time.
I dont mean to diagnose anything. I'm just sharing with you some things that have helped me through my ongoing journey to wellness. Good luck!

It may very well be, that you have a pre-exsiting issue with toe, cause by the way you were walking prior to the op, and it could be protesting now, since the op as you are sure to be walking differently, post op. Ask you medic if you can take Ibuprofen for a while. I would keep icing it, and elevate it a much as possible
Could give the surgeon's secretary a call, the nurses or physiotherapy.

I had big toe pain for my first THR operation, and was advised (from someone on this forum) to get a taller cushion to sleep with to keep the covers from continually pressing down on it.
That cured it for me. It's surprising how sleeping on your back can affect you.

Yes, me. I've realised that on my hip side foot I walk from my heel onto the ball of my big toe instead of onto all of my toes. It's the way the hip pivots now I guess. I'm trying to walk with my foot flat on the floor. 👣

I have been sleeping with it out the bedcovers cos it hurts with the covers on it. Never thought of gout but I will definitely show the surgeon my toe and if no joy as soon as I can drive will see my GP and ask if it could be gout . I will carry on with my foot pumps and I walk my littlies to the bus stop twice a day I know that I walked on the side of my foot for a good while cos it hurt my hip the least and was the only way I could get upstairs with my leg cocked out to the side! So thanks everyone you’ve given me fab input and ideas

I took everyone’s advice on board and decided that I would see a dr when I’m able to drive again in the meantime I’ve been icing regularly and using muscle cream and ibuprofen. This morning I stubbed my toe and it hurt like well really flipping bad but only for a few seconds so out came the ice a little while later after icing I realised that the pain had gone!!! Still a little puffy and slightly red and a little sore but tonnes better so I’m thinking maybe because I was walking so badly before my op for several months that stubbing it has put it back in place?!
