Bilateral Hip Surgery or One at a time

About me

My dilemmna is left is bone on bone and right hip is now giving me pain as well. Want to do both at once but my fear is after having back fusion in March it would be diffcult to handle both at once. Sleeping on my back after surgery could create problems in the back. Also I have don't have anyone who could be there 24/7. I appreciate any opinion. One hip at a time or bilateral and get it over with?

I had bilateral hop replacement on Tuesday. My departure day was originally set to today but has now been changed to Monday. I am finding the pain when trying to walk excruciating. Have not yet been on crutches nor have I tried steps. Everybody here tells me that I was very brave to have both done at once. I am looking forward to the day when I can look back and say it was so worth it x

I had bilateral thr 10 weeks ago, I didn't find it painful or challenging. Seemed similar to the others on the ward only having one done. I'm really pleased I had both together. I was worried about sleeping on my back but the painkiller knocked me out and I slept really well and continue to do so but now I'm on my side.

    Best wishes,

Hi  Gary had my trh replacement 18 days ago nothing like I was expecting . Leg felt as though it belonged to some one else second day was the worst then bam it kicked in and I've not looked back people tell you it's very painfull I can tell you it's not. I don't have any one here 24/7 but get visitors every day who do what I can't if your worried go. For one and you won't be afraid of the second one as you will know what to expect good luck and think Posative xx

I wanted to have both done at once but my consultant refused. The reason he gave was that if there was a problem with either of them, due to the weakness of the other it would be an extremely long recovery that could result in being stuck in a wheelchair for a while during recovery.

I had the 2 done a few months apart each with a fairly short recovery time which may well have totalled less than having them both done at once.

We will never know which is best as each case is different but there does seem to be a reluctance here in the UK to do both of them at once.

That makes sense ... helps a lot I think I'll do the same and stagger them..  you never know maybe I was relying on the right one and it will be ok

    Hi Gary

I don't think I did had the muscle sparing type. All I know is that the scars will be down both sides of hips. I am on day 5 of op and totally swollen from waist to toes.....tree trunk legs and bum like an elephant.😀. Hoping that the swelling will start going down a bit today to make it easier to try to walk. Don't yet know day of discharge.

Hi I had left hip replacement on 3 8 16 was home the next day .. now walking unaided just stick for longer distances. Now on no painkillers as do not require them . Spinal anaesthetist which I was anxious about was great I asked for sedation also and can't rember a thing . Had physio every 3 days and definatley exercises helped quick recovery . Positive attitude also .. worst part is not being able. To drive as live alone . I was also anxious pre op but would.not be again. If had to have second hip operate on as the.pain went immediately just had post op discomfort . I am 52 and despite only being a few weeks.post op so pleased I had surgery as has made a big difference.

It sounds like you're doing amazing Fiona, what approach did you have?

My surgeon told me I could have a bilateral but I chickened out the day before. I had my left one done in April, posterior approach and I'm so pleased I chickened out! I couldn't imagine having them both done at the same time. I've got my right one on Tuesday.

Hi I live lake district but visited a few surgeons as hoped stem cell or hip arthroscopic surgey would work but needed THR Used traditional app roach with none cemented hip .but hospital runs enhanced recovery programme which definatley worked for me . The 80 yr old lady in next room also went home the nex day so not just an age thing .. she also has done very well as wanted to get back to her gardening as soon as hip precautions allow . First couple days always the hardest but with correct pain regime makes mobilty and exercises a lot easier .. it's normal to feel apprehensive before any surgery but remain positive and.hopefully u will be up and about soon . Good luck
