Bilateral knee replacements

hello, I'm had both knees replaced 5 days ago. I stayed 1 night in the hospital and am home doing the excersizes the PT. folks told me to do. I go back to see the doc for 2 week post op check. I am hoping I am doing enough to keep them from losing ROM. Anyone have a guideline?

I had both knees replaced 4 years ago but I had homehealth care a physical therapy and they came every day except weekends for 2 weeks until I was able to go to outpatient therapy. I live in Florida so I dont know if that's an option for you ? doing it on your own for the first 2 weeks after bilateral knee replacement I wouldnt recommend based on my own experience.

Put your feet on a large ball while lying on your back. (Use a long towel for assistance to get into place.) Roll the ball back and forth, bending and straightening your knees. Then, with your legs as straight as you can get them (heels still in the ball), let your knees "hang" into a straighter position - maybe do one at a time. Shoot for one minute at first, building up to five minutes. If this is too painful, put a large towel roll under your ankles, and let your knees ease into straightening. ALSO, If you don't have a large ball, put plastic wrap under a foot while sitting in a chair. Slide your foot forward and backward as far as you can go - for five minutes.
Be working on tightening your quads - the muscles above the knee. This will help with straightening also.

one night!! where do you live ? thats too soon to go home in my opinion! but just concentrate on bending and straightening , even just lying in bed , dont overdo it it will just make them swell , also ice them , good luck

I had my bilateral knee replacements done 3 years ago in Wisconsin. I was in hospital 2 and a half days. Then did home care p.t. for 2 weeks before going to Wellness center for physical therapy which helped tremendously. I took my time with everything and even waited 8 weeks to drive. It felt no different than before surgery when I did drive again. I kept up with the p.t. exercise program afterwards and still try to them if I get stiff. I had a good recovery and am glad I can actually walk again. There are some days I feel stiff or sore but use a topical gel.
YouTube has some great after surgery exercises and tips...just look up knee replacement surgery I believe. Good luck!

Your a worrier!! both at once! do exactly what they say and you will be fine! rest, exercise, ice, patience and time is your friend. I needed someone at home to help push the exercises because it hurt, but found out real fast not to skip even one day! even though it hurts it hurts less after and your ROM will love you for it. Also keeps the scare tissue down. My PT person has me doing heat in the morning to loosen up and ice throughout the day. Good luck to you, Like they all say it takes 6 months to a year recovery ,time ,patience, and prayers help me, oh, and cry when you feel like it!! lol.
