Binge drink on Sertraline

Hi Guys, I did something really stupid at the weekend- it was my friend's 50th so I binge drank Friday and saturday! I upped my Sertraline to 100mg the week and did have a couple of good days last week (will have been on it 4 weeks this Thursday, so I think still early days) BUT waking up yesterday after drinking I felt hideous.... so anxious, racing heart, sick feeling in stomach. Haven't managed to get any sleep either 😞. Has anyone had this before and will it wear off? Xx

Yes I have had this.   You are ok, it will pass.  Plenty fluids.  Relaxation breathing, eat healthy.   Also remember you have increased sert so prob feeling more anxious due to that.   If you feel it’s too much to cope, phone the doc and ask for diazepam for a few days to help calm you as you get used to increase xx

You could also try and do something with all the nervous energy, like I dunno, wash windows or tidy the house etc.   Sometimes I find it helps to work it off and get moving.  X

I'm beginning to wonder if I know you....... I too went to a friend's 50th birthday party at the weekend!

I've been on sertraline for nearly 5 weeks now, fortunately I didn't binge drink because I just don't fancy alcohol, which considering I used to drink every night is quite something for me.  Must have had about 6 units in the last month.

Your feelings will pass, alcohol is a depressant, you're having like an extended hangover!

Keep positive and try to stay active-ish.

Caron I’m hoping to start sert again tomorrow when I see my gp.  I’m currently on mirtazapine which I want off.   I did take sert for 4 years though so I know it agrees with me just a bit worried about tapering from mirt to sert.  When I took sert before I was at 100 at my worst and then pretty much maintained for the majority of the time at 50.  X

    Hi Laura,

I have just done the switch from Mirt to Sertraline. Was on paroxetine for years then had bad patch Christmas 2016 so my then GP changed me to Mirt. 2017 was a horrendous year as I lost my Mum and in hindsight I don't think the Mirt was doing much. I was on 30mg then in Feb this year my new GP upped it to 45mg but it obviously wasn't doing anything as I went back as my OCD got bad and I guess this anxiety episode was on the way.  She seemed a bit surprised I was on that as it's not one of the first one they go for and started me on 50mg Sertraline and dropped my Mirt to 30mg. After 2 weeks she upped Sert to 100mg and dropped Mirt altogether- that was 9 days ago! I think they are different types of drugs completely?

Slightly concerned as when I saw the pharmacist earlier she said it takes a couple of weeks doe Sert to work and I'm on week 4 but reading lots of reviews on here it takes a while longer! Good luck with it- oh I'm also on propranolol to help with anxiety but not sure it's doing much xx

Caron sorry about your mum.  I lost my dad 4 years ago and that’s when my anxiety spiralled so I get it, it’s a tough thing to go through.   I do remember that for me, sertraline helped quickly, I mean like, I was feeling brighter within 2-3 weeks but with mirtazapine I just feel the same except lathargic and flat, it’s not lifting me.   Try and keep reminding yourself that all the side effects are a step closer to feeling better and that they are feelings that can’t hurt you, and they will pass, you aren’t going nuts I promise.   Xx

Caron also remember you have stopped mirt and rather abruptly, I would have thought she would have dropped you to 15 before just stopping.   Anyway, hang in there.  I will prob be in the same state in a few days so I will come back and re read my posts to you lol x
