Hi Susan. I used to binge as well (although was never sick) and I broke the cycle by 1: Not having any large quantities of carbohydrate/sugary rich foods in the house at any one time and 2: making sure I eat little and often throughout the day to ensure I don't get over hungry. I hope these techniques are able to help you.

    Hi Susan,

I'm sorry to hear about your struggles, it must be very painful. The UK's eating disorder charity, Beat run online support groups which also include binge eating. There is also a free helpline you can call which is open 365 days of the year from 3pm - 10pm.

My diagnosis is anorexia, but as part of my anorexia I also ended up bingeing (could never make myself throw up) so I know how painful this is. It took me years to talk to my treatment team about this because I felt like I was a failed anorexic but when I did my dietitian looked at me as if it was weird not to be bingeing! I was so glad I talked about it, because I learned a lot about how to prevent binge episodes in my recovery. It is challenging and I would recommend working with a dietitian. Basically your body relies on energy in the same way it relies on oxygen. If you become short of oxygen you try to catch your breath and that speeds up. Energy deprivation works the same and you try to reach energy in its densest form (which isn't hard - that can mean chocolate, chips etc.). It's hard, but to work through bingeing you need to have energy regularly (i.e. carbs).

It sounds like this might be a lot to do on your own, so getting dietetic support could really help you. smile
