Bisoprolol, does it work?

Posted , 6 users are following.

I was diagnosed with AF about 8 weeks ago. I was put on Bisoprolol 1.25 per day plus Rivaroxaban. All good for the first 3/4 weeks then my palpatations became more constant (125 pm). My specialist advised to double the dose to 2.5, then after a further week, due to no change, 5 per day. I've now been moved to the full dose of 10 per day but after two days see no change in my heatbeat, still a very irregular 125/130 beats per minute. Am I expecting too much too soon? My blood pressure is always normal by the way.

A dr suggested I go on rivaroxaban, but I ended up not taking any due to reviews on Internet about it.

It worked quickly for me. A 2.5 mg in the morning and another at night brought my heart rate down from 136 bpm to 36 bpm overnight.

Thank you Derek, that's interesting. I'll keep you posted. Paul

After that I was reduced to 1.25mg a day that my GP called almost a homeopathic dosage.

I took it for several months with many side effects and now my records say " Bisoprolol intolerant"

In reality my my heart rate was normally in the low 40's but with sudden surges. After a seven day ECG monitor found it going even lower than that with 3.5 second pauses between beats I was fitted with a pacemaker. That kicks in when the rate goes below 60 bpm and I'm now usually in the 70's but still get periods when it gets too high and will be getting an AV Node Ablation.

Hi Betty, Bisoprolol is part of the beta-blocker family.

Paul, this is a personal experience. I have no 'qualified' medical knowledge.

When my Holter test confirmed I have AF (my heart rate regularly dropped to below 50bpm) my cardiologist suggested that I install a heart pacer. I agreed mainly because the Holter monitor also informed my heart flatlined three times in 24 hours.

My heart pacer was calibrated so that the heart maintains a minimum heartbeat of 60 bpm. My heart rate does rise to above 100bpm when I eat out, especially where MSG is used for cooking. I have had the pacer since December 2015 and it seems to work well.

    Hope this sharing helps.

When I had my pacemaker fitted I made the choice of chicken casserole for the hospital dinner. It was not at all what I expected and was a strange orange colour with  a very spicy taste and must have had MSG in it as I had a hot flush, felt light headed and my heart rate went way up. I called the nurse who had me lay flat and gave me an injection that settled things down.

      Hi Derek,

The pacer does not 'cure' the AF. We are still stuck with the AF and our cardiologists uses the pacer to regulate our heart beat.

So if we take MSG our heart would still react accordingly.

I've never liked MSG. The first time we went to Hong Kong we sought out restaurants that didn't use it. Many here will hold the MSG if you ask them to.

Actually I'm going for my pacemaker check this afternoon.
