Bit of advice needed please

Hi all, I'm 11 post THR on my right hip, I had a ceramic on ceramic joint, wasn't told if it's cemented in or not. I seemed to recover well initially and did regular exercise and followed the rules to the letter. At about week 7 I slipped down the bottom stair at hope and landed with a thud on my bum cheek of the operated side. I rang the GP who didn't seem at all concerned ,i do feel this set me back a couple of weeks as my bottom was very sore and bruised. Since then I have seen my own osteopath, as the NHS hasn't provided me with any follow up care! He is massaging certain muscles and has given my personal trainer lists of exercise to help build up the muscles. I am 51 and relatively fit. I did attend the gym prior to my op but have been very good and started back at square one. But now I'm wondering I'm I'm pushing myself too hard. I swim and do pool based exercise one day and gym bases exercise the next. I walk every day too. I am overweight and have put on 8lbs since my op, so very keen to lose this extra weight. How much exercise is too much? I'm back at work next week on a phased return, but my hip still feels weak and sore and when I'm tired I limp. Could I be overdoing it and asking too much of my new joint? I couldn't live without co codamol now and I was at a stage at week 3/4 when I don't need them. This is worrying me a bit.

Any advice would be well received.

I would deffo calm down a bit. Over doing it could do more damage then good. I would try doing simple exercises rather ythan strenious exercise. Also i wouldnt think about being over weight because that will force you to exercise more. Although i have not yet had my op i find it hard to even walk to the corner shop without crying from pain. So obvs i carnt exercise, although my bmi says im 3st over weight im going to ugnore it because if i tried to exercise i would make things so much worse. So yeah just try and take things slowly ☺

I do empathise Sarah, I have arthritis in both my knees and my other hip, so exercise isn't something I chose to do do without a really good reason! I had to get my BMI below 35 to have the op on NHS, I did manage, with a lot of hard work, to get it down to 32 prior to the op. I will try to slow down a bit, thank you 😊

I think mine was less than that and i dont look overweight but it is hard when you cant exercise. I think it makes me more concious to being as young as i am i cant wear nice clothes or go out and so on

When are you next due to see your consultant?

it might be muscles, or you might have hurt your back/spine

area. Your hip should be secure, if you had dislocated

you would be in intense pain. Don't you have to be signed

fit to work by a medic?

Apparently Cathie you don't have to get a GP note to return to work anymore. As soon as your note runs out you go back.im lucky I work in a school, so I only have two days before another two weeks off. If this wasn't the case I would be saying I needed more time off. I have digenerative disc disease and slightly collapsed discs in my back anyway but that, luckily hasn't caused me any more pain than normal 😊 I'm seeing consultant on 7/1 where he will X ray the new joint, so I think that will put my mind at rest. I think I am probably worrying unnecessarily as my osteopath would tell me if he was worried about the joint.

    Hi Barty,

You have been trying hard - too hard!

You can make things a lot worse by trying to do too much too soon.

If I do too much I end up taking pain-killers again: Also when I try to be smart and leave my stick at home. That makes me limp and ache afterwards.

Slowly, slowly, catchee monkey in this game.confused

I had a feeling that was the problem Shirly, I think I've been spurned on, not only because I'm back to work but also I'm seeing my consultant on 7/1 to sign up for my other hip to be done. My consultant keeps banging on about me losing weight even though I lost nearly two stones before the last one! I need to slow down a bit then 😳

Yes, I got down to goal weight at the beginning of 2015 with W/W

but had an op in April and a new hip in September and have ptu it all back on againsad I am going to rejoin the slimmers in January in the hope of losing my spare tyre. I reckon it is 50/50 diet and exercise. So if you can't exercise properly you are stuffed (literally) lol

Stour right it is 50/50, the best thing I found to help keep me on track is a Fitbit, I log all my food online and it tracks my exercise and steps etc, so I know how many calories I've used up and taken in. I've also tried WW and SW for fell off the wagon! 😫 It's tough to not put the weight back on after surgery, especially when your so inactive for weeks! Good luck with it, keep us posted on your progress 😊

I had a weight problem, but managed to lose 5 stone (70 pounds) in 18 monthe before the THR.   I now find I cannot even eat the quantity that I used to because my stomach has shrunk.   Depends on how you do it i suppose, I went from sandwiches andpies, to salads and lean meat with the help of my surgery nurse.

    hi barty,

I don;t know what to tell you ... it seems to me that you yourself feel that you might be overdoing it a bit - weakness in and around the hip muscle at 11 weeks post-op is normal - it is still early stage and healing is still taking place -

are you walking unaided?  if so, maybe it is too early to do so ... if your hip is not strong enough yet, your walk might be off, unbalanced and you will limp to compensate -

you also mentioned that your other hip might need the surgery as well -

be gentle with your self and take it down a notch and see how you feel -

    big warm hug
