Bites on 3 year old

Every summer my son ends up with these bites that end up almost eating away at his skin. I've taken him to the pediatrician but she had no idea what they could be from and just said to put vaseline on them and not worry about them further. I have pictures, but no idea how or if i can post them. We live in southern Indiana. Any insight would be appreciated.

Bummer.  Are you sure they are bites and not some kind of allergic reaction?   I wonder if there is a natural repellent that would be safe for a 3 year old.  Is there a natural health store in your area?  I remember when I moved to Alabama and got my first dose of poison oak.

Honestly no I'm not sure. But they're in random places, as opposed to centralized like an allergic reaction. He could be allergic to what's biting him I suppose. And I dont believe there is a natural health store, no.
