Black bits in stools

Hi all,

This past week I've been having normal bowel movements compared to other weeks where I was either constipated or had diarrhoea (I do believe i suffer from IBS). However, the last 3 days I've had discomfort / tenderness in the lower left abdominal area.

The last week my diet has been poor, from nearly having takeaway (KFC & McDonalds) every night to processed foods such M&Ms, chips, BBQs, you name it.

Today I passed 2 bowel movements, both dark brown in colour with undigested food found in my stools that were black in colour. They were mostly stringy, looked like fruit skin. But they were grouped together in chunks in my brown stool.

I’ve been able to pass gas, produce stools and still eating regularly without any pain or discomfort.

Is this something to be concerned about? Is it blood? Has anyone experienced this before?

I have flagged this with my GP back in December when this happened once before. I am going in for a colonoscopy and endoscopy next week. I don’t have anaemia as my blood results came back normal.

hi brndn, i hate to say it but it may be the case that your diet is the reason your bowel is so sick. if your having a colonoscopy and endoscopy can ask what you're having these for? does your doctor suspect anything else? do you eat fruit, do you keep a list of what you're eating? even with these tests you may not be able to help your bowel if you eat non-stop fast food still. you must watch your diet to make yourself well. i don't know how old you are, but you do have a chance to heal it. i'm sorry if it seems harsh, but you look after you. good luck with your tests i hope they explain why your bowel is sick,if it does then j stand corrected.

Hi Sam, thanks for getting back to me (not harsh at all). I believe my poor diet may be the case too. My GP has made me get both endoscopy and colonoscopy as I had completed black tarry diarrhea in 2017 which was caused by falling really ill and taking numerous medications (she wanted to be safe). I do eat fruits (strawberries, blueberries) every morning with oats, which usually sit easy with my stomach. Today I've started making a journal of what food I eat and symptoms (if any) I get after eating and clocking bowel movements. I do hope it's just a sick stomach and it does heal, I'm only 25 and already having these issues.

The left side pain and change in stool could be IBS due to the fact that the fast food diet is catching up to. Good idea to check with your doctor though.
