Bladder issue, IBS or kidney problem, what do you think?

Hi, in all the six years approx that I have had IBS and prolapsed bowel  I have never had swelling and pain in my lower abdomen or bladder area, these past few days, I have been unable to wee some of the time, had severe bloating in that region so that I felt like I was pregnant - too old now - or could hardly walk, plus a lot of discomfort and pain and difficulty weeing. I don't understand with my type of IBS, that rarely presents like this, why I should have this, also about four months ago, my poo, short of having an anuerism, heart attack or bursting a blood vessel, would not come further than just above the entrance and I could not, no matter how I tried, force it out, had to manually assist and its been like this constantly for four months, now i have the extreme swelling and discomfort in my bladder I don't know what to do.  I have had a check for fybremalosis, or however you spell it, where you lose control of your muscles, but doctor says all is well there and has run tests, but I am also asking him Monday, in a telephone consultation, for a urine test for my kidneys, as I really do not know whats going on, it is painful to walk and also sit at the laptop so most of my time is spent in bed these days, pooing has always been uncomfortable and required considerable straining, but now, for about four months, it won't "get there" despite rigorous straining, what do I do, whats wrong with me?

    Hi Fiona,

You don't say what type of prolapse you have, but I have a rectocele (plus enterocele and intussusception) which puts spressure on my bladder and doesn't allow me to empty out in one go. Sometimes, one or the other of these prolapses will also do its best to prevent me from fully evacuating my bowel (stool gets stuck in it). My colorectal consultant told me to do pelvic floor exercises (for which I use an electronic pelvic toner) and to keep my system 'well flushed through' by taking a laxative if things got difficult. The exercises have improved things considerably and I use magnesium citrate if I have a real problem with evacuation.

    Hope this helps.

Hi, I have a full rectal prolapse, for which surgery was ineffective, and nothing has been suggested since, I do the pelvic floor exercises daily but although they work for some, I'll wager, for me they were about as much use as taking sugar pills, they had no effect.  Where I have now since surgery a deformed colonic muscle and also diverticular pouches, if I take laxatives, it is STILL, the poo, getting equally as stuck or trapped, and resultantly causes me to get diarrhoea all over my fingers which is highly unpleasant and something I am not prepared to put myself through, I would much prefer they were hard stools as that way they are easier to evacuate, well marginally and don't cause all the messiness.  I take apple cider vinegar with mother every other day as this helps me to go more in "one fell swoop", although it is still not normal, my bowel motions, but it works a little for me.  Imodium caused me to have really unpleasantly hard stools and did not decrease the frequency, so I don't know what to do but feel a home colonic irrigation which uses only a very small amount of water and is prescribed and overseen by a qualified corectal nurse, would be an option to consider.

Have you try probiotic and keep a good diet. Better consult with doctor. About the poo you should drink water before breakfast or having fibre drink.

Alternately, you drink orange juice or apple juice which helps you with constipation. All the best

I appreciate your input but have tried all you mention, with a prolapse and deformed muscle sadly there are no simple solutions, it's a lot more complicated than simple IBS, in my experience

I'm sure I do need an operation, but the original one they performed the surgeon and medics were unwilling to admit was a failure and they proceeded to use my schizophrenia as a "blanket term" with which to assign my symptoms to the back burner and Mark down as "behavioural", it's unfair, but I've had it six years, what else can you expect from a"holier than thou" medical profession that's vastly being sold off, the nhs, to private companies? It's indicative of the system and it's the system that's at fault.
