Bladder Prolapse repaired using mesh

Are there any other women on here who had have a prolapse repaired with mesh that are happy with it? I am due to go for surgery in April and have been reading stories on here saying not to have it repaired with mesh. What are the alternatives? my consultant has not mentioned any to me. I had a hysterectomy nearly four years ago for a womb prolapse and thought that's great I won't suffer any more but a few months later I started getting water

infections and painful bladder. Since then I have been taking a small dose of antibiotics every night which did seem to help with the water infections but not the uncomfortable bladder and soreness down below. Anyone have any views on the mesh repair.

Hello. Your consultant won't have mentioned any alternatives because he'll be part of the research group trialling the mesh which is banned in Scotland and the USA. You are right to be cautious. At the end of the day it's your decision. If you decide you don't want it they can't force you.

    Hiya,

I had my op almost two years ago with mesh, posteria and antieria repairs and I've had no problems at all other than piles recently but I think this is unconnected.

I wish you all the best with your op. Have faith and remember the pelvic floor exercises which I do every night

in aug 13 i had hysterectomy and posterior repair, within weeks i had anterior repair which was repaired in aug 14 with mesh.  the bulge just seems to be higher than before the second repair, i have no bladder problems or infections, but it doesnt feel right up there! I have had two major operations and cant face another right now, but im sure if i go back to the dr that will be the only option.

    Hi

I had a rectocele op 4 months ago using mesh.  I live in France and wasn't offered any alternatives, and hadn't heard about any complications beforehand as I didn't find this site until after my op.  However, so far I've been fine so long may it continue.   Everyone is different and so good luck with whatever you decide.

    Hi Joebel,

I had a TVT procedure with Mesh (although it is referred to as a tape) and didn't have a good experience of it.  I would certainly research the use of Mesh thoroughly before you procede

Hi,I had a anterior and posteria repair over 2yrs ago using synthetic mesh, had to have it removed last year due to chronic back pain which I didn't have before the mesh, there are thousands of women in the US awaiting synthetic mesh removal so please do not have synthetic mesh.

There is biological mesh available(porcine)which is safer and has been used for years in surgery,I am waiting now for another anterior repair using porcine(pig skin)mesh to repair the cystocele that has come back since having the biological mesh removed, please discuss the different types of mesh available with your consultant and avoid synthetic mesh altogether. Take care,if you want any more help don't hesitate to ask, this forum is very helpful.

You are absolutely right diane. Sorry to hear you're having these problems. I had the porcine mesh 4 years ago and have been fine. The good thing about that type of mesh is that within a year or so it dissolves. Good luck. I hope you get your appointment for surgery very soon.

Thank you for your advice. I will telephone my consultant on Monday to find out what sort of mesh he intends to use. Is the porcine mesh available here in the U.K. If so can I ask that he uses this one?

Yes I'm in the UK and I think it was the most commonly used when I had my operation. If I remember correctly my gynaecologist said it lasts about a year to allow the tissues and muscles to grow and develop around it so that by the time it dissolves everything is in place and basically secure.

Yes you should be able to discuss porcine mesh with them, good luck, let me know how it goes

I remember having to sign two consent forms. One for the operation itself, the other giving the consultant permission to use the porcine mesh.

    Hi Joe,

    Ive been reading your replies.

There are obviously different uterine operations for different prolapses.

I have been offered a mesh surgery for lifting womb and bladder not just bladder and I am aware of the problems with mesh in USA.

Thank you ladies for making me aware that there is a porcine mesh available.

I am wondering though if it is only used for certain prolapses and may not be strong enough to hold womb and bladder. I need to make enquiries too.

The other operation for me is hysterectomy which can lead to the bladder falling further as some of you ladies have experienced later sometimes years later.

I am not straightforward however I am beginning to realise prolapse is never straightforward.  I have uterine prolapse with womb and bladder down however NO prolapse pain or dragging or leakage with this.  May be very slight leakage at times.

My symptoms are primarily anal discomfort,as though there is an obstruction in my anus initially giving me haemorrhoidal symptoms with no bleeding, itching or constipation. I also have embarrassing bouts of wind due to very poor anal sphincter muscles and occasional accidents of fecal incontinence with no constipation.

I  wake  with this discomfort from lying on my back in the morning, sitting is worse,

Sitting proctogram showed distal Intussusception and there may be some firm of internal rectal prolapse here. EUA has been offered however I am making enquiries with regards to surgeons expertise as banding, HALO, had been offered which may or may not help or could make things worse.

Only a few colorectal specialists specialise in prolapse issues.

    I am still seeking advice.

As I have prolapse in all 3 compartments.

The gynaecologist and rectal surgeon do not always work together.

Good luck with your surgery Joe with your bladder however keep an open mind as there is also a surgery called ventro pexy for bladder and bowel using mesh too.

    Sandra
