Bladder retention

Hi all, I am a 20 year old female who works in a hospital as a health care assistant. I am suffering with urinary retention and currently undergoing tests to try and see what is causing it? It got to a pooint about a month ago that i couldnt pass urine at all and was taken to hospital. They did a bladder scan and i had over a ltire in my bladder that i was unable to get rid of. So they put a catheter in to empty my bladder. I was sent home with a catheter for 3 weeks until I was taught self-catheterisation techniques from a special nurse. I am now back to work and having to catheterise myself about 4 times a day. I have had an MRI scan ordered by my urologist and had my ultrasound today which hasnt shown anything unusual. I was just wondering whether anyone (around my age group) has had a similar problem? Or if anyone knows whether sertraline could be causing this? I have been on this this tablet for about 3-4 months. Thanks so much for your help. Rebecca

    Hi..

I was on parox which is from the same family of tablets as sertraline and I had problems passing urine also, but not as bad as you.!!

It's possible it's an effect from your medication. I had lots of problems with parox but since I changed to sertraline I'm great, medication affects everybody differently it's just a matter of finding the one for you.

    Hope you improve soon.X

Hi Lee, Thank you for your reply. I will talk to my doctor and ask whether its possible the dose may be too high or i simply need a different tablet. x

Okay, I am on 50mg of sertraline at the minute which isnt thst high i dont think. Before sertraline i was suffering really badly with panic attacks most of the time couldnt leave the house. Havent had any problems with urination until now. was taken to hospital with over a litre in my bladder and i just couldnt go for a wee.

Hi Rebecca. I'm on Zoloft and I am having problems urinating as well. I'm not sure it the Zoloft is causing it. I have been on Zoloft for 2 years just recently did I increase my dose by 12.5. My doctor did a curin filter and found whiter white blood cells than normal. They gave me meds for a yeast infection. A week later still having problems. They gave me uti medicine. Still having a problem. It's like uti systems but no burning. Just having trouble passing iron. I have an appointment with the urologist Thursday.

Hi yeah thta sounds identical to me. I was originally put on antibiotics for a UTI for 11 days but didnt have a uti urine came back negative for uti. My bloods that the hospital took cameback okay apart from a certain part that suggests that I have swelling somewhere. I have had utis in the past but this isnt it. No burning at all when i pee. He may suggest that you self catheterise. I am hoping that my urologist asks for more tests as i dont want to be catheterising forever. I have read about endometriosis which seems to fit too as i have always had problems with heavy/painful periods.

I apologize for so many typos! I didn't realize my phone autocorrected. Sounds so much like what I'm going through. I really hope I don't have to self cathererise, it just sounds intimidating. I notice it happens to me at night more than during the day. Same with you?

No worries. It sounds very similar. yeah it isnt nice but definilty prefer it to hving a permenent catheter in which i had before. Mine tends to be worse in the morning when i wake up and sometimes afternoon.

Wow you explained exactly what I've been going through, I have been taking sertaline for 2 years 50-100 mg but I'm giving it up right now because it's giving me urinary problems , I'm no doctor but I'm sure it's the cause for me as I also have had all said tests done also , thanks rebecca
