Bleach in bloodstream?

Hello.  I haven't used these forums before and, as a result, have possibly categorised this incorrectly.  If so, apologies for that.

Basically, I used the toilet today when it was full of household bleach (I didn't check it beforehand - only noticed afterwards).  As I defecated, the bleach splashed up and washed over the bottom of my legs and anus, and I am concerned that some may have gone up my bottom (!) and that I may therefore have absorbed some of the bleach into my bloodstream?  I immediately jumped in the shower upon realising, and washed myself.  There was no burning sensation then or subsequently, and I've felt fine all day.  But is it possible that a small amount of bleach could've been absorbed into my blood-stream anyway?

I suppose I'm most worried about any effects this might have on my brain.  Would household bleach cross the blood-brain barrier if absorbed into the blood-steam.  And would such a small amount be likely to have any effect if so?  The only thing I've noticed is that I've felt a little light-headed since, although this may be the anxiety...

Thanks in advance, very worried.

David

I serIously doubt that household bleach, dIluted In water, could possIbly hurt you, especIally sInce you showered rIght away. I have washed my hands In undIluted bleach many tImes wIth no Ill effects, although I wouldn't recommend It. Even on that part of your anatomy It should not enter the blood stream, and certaInly not the braIn. If you were In any danger, your skIn would be the fIrst to let you know. You'd have serIous burnIng or a bad rash.

Well if I were you I'd google symptoms of bleach consumption and harmful volumes. I doubt you absorbed anything more than 50-100ml tops which could potentially be harmful but on the lower end much safer and probably unsymptomatic. And medically speaking I don't believe bleach crosses the blood brain barrier but it's not impossible to absorb it through your lower intestines.

Anyway, there are probably numbers you can call, or drop into your local GP and ask to have a 5 minute chat with a doctor concerning what may be an emergency etc just in case. It's better to not take the risk although since you seem to be fine you probably are but it couldn't hurt to ask an expert smile
