Bleeding a week after marsupialization, is this normal?

Posted , 2 users are following.

Hi all,

This is my 4th marsupialization of a bartholins cyst, but I'm bleeding a lot more this time. I mentioned to the consultant after surgery that there seems to be a lot of bleeding, but was told not to worry about it as I'll experience a small amount of bleeding/discharge/spotting for a few days. It's now been a week and I still have a lot of fresh bleeding, it's almost like a period (I know it's not a period as I haven't had one since having my mirena coil fitted 8 months ago). Is this normal or should I be worried?

Thanks for any help smile

    Hi Poppy

I am not sure if this will help but I have also recently undergone a marsupialization and have also experienced a lot of bleeding - although the onset was not immediately after surgery but a few weeks later and, I too, thought it was a period.  It lasted for about two weeks but has now stopped.  I mentioned it to my doctor (who I had to attend as I have since developed a second cyst on the other side!) and he said that it was quite normal and nothing to worry about.

Hope you get better soon xx

Thanks for letting me know about your experience, I feel a lot less worried knowing it's not just me that's had a lot of bleeding.

I'm sorry to hear that you have a second cyst, I hope it goes away without any more surgery xxx

Thank you.  So do I.  I am now on a course of 2 different antibiotics for 2 weeks - 6 weeks post marsupialization and 2 weeks post the second cyst - as neither of the cysts have completely cleared ...................... "fed up" doesn't come anywhere near xx

Has yur doctor discussed removing the gland with you? The consultant who performed my surgery said that was my next option xx

I have been suffering with these since 1998 - that's not a typo, I do mean 1998, getting on for 20 years - and no one has ever mentioned this to me.  If the medication I am taking at the moment doesn't work, I have been told that I shall have to return to hospital for a further op and "packing" (whatever that means) but I shall certainly ask about this now - thank you so much and I do wish you a very speedy recovery and that you don't suffer the recurrences that I have. xx

I know exactly how you feel! This is my 11th one in 10 years, it's only ever been the right gland too. I asked to have the gland removed at an outpatient gyne appointment but the consultant refused, yet the consultant who operated on me at the same hospital recommended it. I'm worried about having it removed, but I think it's worth any risks.

If it's a marsupialization and packing, that's what I had done on Friday. It's the exact same procedure, except they literally pack the opened gland with guaze for 24 hours then remove it (you'll be kept in overnight). The packing feels odd and bulky but it's not painful. Just a little warning, they stick it with surgical tape to your bikni line area, so make sure you don't have any hair there because they'll be giving you a mini wax! xx

Thanks for that, it doesn't sound too bad (in the scheme of things, that is) and a free bikini line wax to look forward to - lol.  I will update you with any future occurrences/treatment/surgical interventions etc of note.   Take care xx
