Bleeding after surgery - how long for?

Posted , 6 users are following.

Hello, this is the first time I have posted on here, perhaps I might have done well to hunt this site out pre surgery smile

Anyway, I had bladder and bowel prolapse repair about 10 days ago. All apparently went well and I was home two days later. I have been pretty good I think at resting and no lifting and have my parents staying to look after the children to helo with this.

For the first few days I had some bleeding then it had pretty much stopped. On Thursday ( 1 week post surgery) I then noticed some blood. We are not talking masses, spotting would be generous, but it is bright red so presumably new not old blood. It was much less yesterday but is a bit more today.

Should I be concerned? Do I need to call the hospital or is this normal? When  I left I was told around 2 weeks of bleeding so it is within this range but I am concerned given it had stopped and it is so red.

Any thoughts / advice much appreciated!

Hello Claire. You will bleed on and off for a few weeks so unless it's very heavy bleeding, smells offensive or your in a lot of pain it's perfectly normal.

    Hi,

I had that as well and then the discharge went on for ages although the consultant had said a few weeks. When I went for my checkup at 7 weeks I told him it was still going on and  he said that's fine ! and in fact  the fact it went on  much the same but lighter for 12 weeks.  Then magically stopped.  So do not worry at all. It seems they don't really tell you how it is or that  it is different for different people .

Yeh I was the same as Alybee, I'm 11 weeks post op now and mine stopped  completely around 9/10 weeks.

The bleeding/discharge seems to increase slightly as the stitches tighten and come away so it's possibly that but all sounds quite normal and a lot of us on here have experienced this.

Good luck with rest of your recovery, take care xx

Mine only went on for about 2 weeks on day 12 a bigger heavier bleed which then turned to a brown colour and only spots, and then nothing more.

hopefully you'll do the same, good luck

I had spotting bright red blood for about six weeks. I thought it would never stop but it did.

Thanks ladies that all sounds reassuring.

When you are doing a lot of sitting around recovering it is very easy to over think everything. From what you have all said it sounds normal so back to more resting for me!
