Bleeding at 3 months on HRT

Posted , 2 users are following.

Hi,

After struggling for over 2 years I started on continuous HRT in Feb this year. I take a micronized progesterone (Utrogestan ) at night and apply Estradiol gel in the morning.

For the first 11 weeks I felt great ,no hot flashes, more energy, it was really working now - boom at the 3 month point I now have erratic bleeding and bad period like cramping.

Ive done some internet reading and bleeding can be a start up effect in the first 3 months, but it seems to have started at the 3 month point.

I contacted my GP for advice and she s not totally sure its the HRT as I also had a polyp removed a year ago and the symptoms are similar to that. Shes referred me to a Gynae for a check up.

Suppose Im asking ,has anyone else had bleeding this long after starting HRT ?

Thanks x

    Hi Alison,

Glad you are feeling better! The breakthrough bleeding is an annoying common side effect from HRT. I was on Femhart for 9 months with no problems and then started bleeding. Turned out my SHBG levels were super high and hormones were binding up in my liver. Had to go on pellets and progesterone pill to bypass liver, after a year of being on the pellets the bleeding ( I hope!!) seems to have stopped. I did have 2 pelvic ultrasounds and an endometrial biopsy to make sure bleeding wasn't something else.

You do need to see an gyno for this though. You should probably have your hormone levels checked again makes sure they are high enough.

My bleeding has stopped but I had to beg my gyno to prescrible a lower progesterone pill as I suspected the 200mg was too high for me, I weigh 117lbs. Turns out the 100mg is the right amount.

Good luck with getting this resolved, it just takes time and trial and error 😃

      Hi Peacefulm,

Thanks for reply . It makes me feel better knowing its not just me !

This HRT journey isnt all smooth sailing is it.

I just dont think I can go back to life before HRT, even if it means putting up with some bleeding.

      Take care

      Hi again Peacefulmarie,

Just thought Id update you as you were kind enough to reply !

I was seen by a Gynae today as GP fast tracked my referral.

Turns out I have some cervical polyps which are probably causing the bleeding.

However if I still have problems after these are removed it could be the HRT as well.

Gynae reccomend a coil instead or stop taking HRT.

      Oh dear. . . .😣
