Blepharitis course of tablets

Posted , 6 users are following.

Hi I've been a blepharitis sufferer for over 10 years now. I tend to not have it over the summer months then from October through to spring it comes back and there's no getting rid of it.

Has anyone been prescribed a long course of antibiotics or anything else for a period of months to keep it at bay? I know doctors tend to say antibiotics stop working after s period of time but I'm desperate to find something that helps.

As well as the blepharitis I'm starting to sink into depression. My family have noticed a change in my behaviour and I've become distant from them and it's all down to the blepharitis. Really need some help but sometimes I feel like there's no point as the doctors can't give me anything that works. I'm desperate.

I get like that also but my blepharitis does not disappear fully during the warmer months. Here are some tips That may help

I recommend trying caster oil before sleeping. Dip a cotton bud in it and apply to eyelid. Leave it on for a minute or two then rub off lightly with a clean cotton bud to get rid of excess. Only a very small amount is required to be effective. It will take 2-3 days for you to notice improvements and may aggravate the blepharitis initially. Use a seperate cotton bud for each eye and don't dip back in after use to avoid contamination. Castor oil is a natural anti-inflammatory it will either work for you after a week or not.

Get a humidifier for night/day time use, if you have indoor heating on it dries out the air making blepharitis worse + change pillow case and have a shower every night because oil from hair aggrivates it.

Use blephaclean or something similar every morning.

Get into a regular sleep pattern with at least 8 hours every night.

Don't drink any caffeine after 1pm and don't have anything with high sugar content after 5pm as it's a inflammatory and your eyelids will be swollen next morning if you eat/drink a lot of sugar, this includes fruit with high amounts of natural sugars

Forget about alcohol it doesn't work with blepharitis

Buy a pair of wind blocker glasses for outside use + get regular exercise.

It's all to easy fall in to depression with bleph. I've been there. My two cents is to take control of your own daily timetable and be selfish about it.

    Hi GroggerLUFC

I have been taking Doxycycline (I think thats the name) my doctor gave me a course for 6 weeks I have been taking them for about 3 now...along with my other routine they do seem to be helping.  I know you will get lots of different routines to try there are so many that work for some and not for others but here goes this is what works for me (at the moment) as I have tried lots.....

I have a Sleep Mask I bought it says helps with Blepharitis by keeping the eye moist overnight (it has also helped) when I get up on a morning I wipe my eyes with cotton pads with a solution of part boiled cooled water and Blephasol Lotion, then later when I get in the shower I usually stand letting the hot water flow over my eyes for awhile ...I also use a shampoo called CAPASAL Herbal with tea tree and coconut oil in on my hair and wash my face/closed eyes with it, ( I read about it in another forum on here) I then use cotton buds with the Blephasol lotion to clean the inside of top and bottom lids then wipe them over with Blephaclean wipes, I tear in half and use half on each eye, you can get these on prescription.  I use Lumecare eye gel and drops during the day as I work full time. When I get in from work I use a microwave heated eye pad for 10mins then use the cotton buds on my lids again and clean my eyes with the cotton pads and the lotion.  Before I go to bed I clean my eyes with the Blephaclean wipes....if I feel it starting I use a little Manuka honey (+20) across my eyelids (its amazing)....and I am hoping this all works permanently for me.......It is a horrible affliction and it seems anything that helps costs an absolute fortune......I really really hope you find a solution that works for you xx

Yes. After months of young back and forwards to hospital appointments after the latest outbreak ( I was diagnosed originally in 2008 but think I've had the condition much longer) I was eventually prescribed 6 weeks of antibiotics. I had a two week additional course as I had to wait to see a dermatologist about the rosecea on my face.

the anti biotics worked. So far no return of the blepharitis.

I use L'Oreal micellar gel cleanser at night and Hylo Forte drops about 6 times a day for dry eyes.

anti biotics have been the only lasting solution to the blepharitis and I can't tell you how much it means to be bleph free !

      Thanks Gwynny

Going to look for some cleaning stuff this weekend like you mentioned in your previous post and get a routine going.

I'm fortunate enough to be able to see a doctor first thing on Monday morning as I'm in the armed forces so I'll be visiting them then.

The depression is linked to this horrible condition but actually posting on here this morning has helped.

Just wish I lived in a sunnier climate so the symptoms wouldn't be as bad!!

I feel for you....I have been really down this year too didn't think I would ever get it under control.....I tried the wet ones baby shampoo tea tree oil and the caster oil but for me it made things worse ...but have to try before finding something that works.... I also read about blephagel so I will be looking for this too.....I work full time and am on a computer all day which doesn't help......

Good luck x hope you get sorted with something soon..... I think it does help to post on here...you know the people who reply are suffering the same and have tales to tell of their trials and the routines that have worked for them that you can try too...chin up hun. ...you will find something that works for you x

Yes I had doxycycline for 28 days. Not sure it helped too much and I worried about taking too many antibiotics so was taking probiotics to put good bacteria back.

my doctor has me on them for long long periods when i was first diagnosed i was on them for over 2 years straight along with steriods that were very very expensive...now he said continue for a year 30 day on and 30 day off all his patients..the pharmacist said no harm is done taking them this way and you will not get antifbiotic resistance 30 day on and 30 day off

i talked with the pharmacist about the doxycycline and he said you are wasting your money if you take the probiotics. The only time you want to take probiotics is if you are getting severe diahreja which means the good bacteria is gone, other wise if you dont have the runs dont waste your money

    Hi

    don't be so depressed.

I've suffered from blepharitis and its complication chalazion for about 1 and a half year.

I had to undergo minor surgical procedure to get rid of chalazion: once in last December 2014 and 2nd time in around June 2015.

My ophthalmologist suggested me that I should make warm lid compression regularly & avoid using eye makeup.

I am applying warm lid compression at least once a week (it's better if you can do it like every other day).

I change my pillow case after washing my hair.

I wash my hair twice a week since hair sebum may probably cause blepharitis.

Instead of avoiding eye make up, I use ophthalmologist tested eye products which are fragrance free also.

On the other hand, I take care of choosing skin care & cosmetic products to be hypoallergic, dermatologist-tested, ophthalmologist tested and fragrance free products.

i wash my eye makeup with baby shampoo.

don't touch your eyes & face with uncleaned hands.

wash your hands once it gets dirty.

Hope all my tips will help you.

wish you'd be free from recurrent blepharitis.

    good luck!!!
