Blepharitis- I cured it and am so relieved

Hi

I’m just posting this because I know how awful Blepharitis is and how debilitating this condition is.

I don’t how it started I just remember waking up in the mornings with pink eyes my right eye more pink than my left. The lower lash line also red I looked tired and as if I’d been crying all the time . I thought I was just tired then I noticed my eyelids and inner eye corners itching like hell. I was always rubbing my eyes. This horrible feeling always there led to to my eyes actually feeling dirty and itchy and my sight seemed blurry and the foreign body sensation was so horrible, and it was all the time. My eyes just randomly went red and then pink and then red but never back to a nice white eyeball. I finally reached my wits end by then I was fed up depressed and walking around with a really angry red eye that was not getting better. I went to the doctor and she sent me home with allergy eyedrops. No improvement went back came home with steroid drops used them for two weeks ....no improvement. By this time I had red small puffy swollen eyes and I was finding my self looking at them throughout the day. Almost obsessed it’s all I could think about so back I went this time to eye a&e. Six hours later I’m told I should never have been taking steroid drops and that I had Blepharitis and mgd. Prescribed dry eye drops and warm compresses and lid hygiene ie. baby shampoo !! Told I had it for life and I was devasted.

Was I really meant to deal with what they called a minor condition for life , surely they couldn’t be so casual about this, it’s a condition that affects your life so much.

Refused to accept it but started with the programme they had advised. The warm compress made it worse eyes more puffy and pink. The eye drops only helped for a short time. I felt sick everytime I looked in a mirror and I looked in the mirror a lot , a vicious circle of discomfort and worry.

Then I Was visiting my mum one day and was whinging about my eyes she also had noticed the state of them.

She went to the cupboard and pulled out just a jar Of standard normal honey. She said I’m going to put this on your eyes and it’s going to sting for about 5 minutes. I refused I said are you crazy things are bad enough as it is. Even the odd eye lash had started to come out nowadays.

She scolded me she said back in the days in India they didn’t go to doctors or buy expensive drops and scrubs they just whacked some honey in thier eyes. I did know my mum does this and my dad and have been for years and years for just general eye health. So I thought what the hell let’s just do it. She took a metal eye liner stick (you get them in Indian kajol bottles ) she disinfected it took a spoon of honey out of the jar doused the metal thing in it and then she swiped across my lower lash line as if applying kajol and then swiped some across the eye lid too and then she practically massaged it all over my eyes.

The stinging and burning was horrendous, oh my days it was so uncomfortable I couldn’t open my eyes they were watering so much. When I could open them for a second I had a hand mirror in front of me and all I could see was pink eyes. I remember screaming mum what have you done. I can’t see there going red !

She laughed and said stay like that for 15 minutes then go wash them with a clean flannel one for each eye.

15 minutes later I washed my eyes and omg the relief it immediately felt better , and no pink eyes. And most amazingly of all my eyes looked like glass and felt so good and omg my vision felt so clear..... it felt like a new lease of life.

I carrried on and to this day I still do it once a week. My eyes are white clear and shiny my lashes are think and back to how they used to be. I have no problems now. I wear eye make up all the time but I make sure my eyes are clean and everything is off properly before bedtime.

I don’t use my dry eye drops anymore I don’t need them I cancelled my repeat prescription from the doctors.

My mum also gave me some kind of other thing to wash my eyes with apparently they use in India for inflamed eyes I have to chop a bit of it off mix it in water and let it foam up then I wash my eyelids with it rinse off and done I do that about twice a week.

All I can say is I know how hard this situation is I know first hand how it affects you menatally and pysically. And if anyone’s was worse than mine then I don’t even want to think how you manage. I just want people who have Blepharitis to just please try honey , seriously , it’s an ancient old remedy used in India. And stick with it it stings it burns but once that subsides the relief is just so amazing.

Thanks mum I always turn my nose up at your herbal remedies but mums know what they’re talking about !

Please try honey ! And all of those suffering from Blepharitis...don’t give up don’t let it get you down , do something about it that’s not text book advice from just the doctors. Because if I hadn’t listened to my mum right now I would probably be still popping drops in through out the day buying eyelid wipes shampoos and god knows what else because I am one of those people who doesn’t give up and I would probably have been trying any product on the market to just make it better.

It’s never come back, but I do my honey thing once a week no matter what and if I have a special occasion , just to get those eyes bright white and sparkly.

Wishing you all the will power to keep going until you find what works for you.

    Hi,

I too was a case of Blepharitis on upper eye lid and my consultant gave me Ocupol Dx Ointment to be used in night. This was of great help to me as it cured Blepharitis within 2-3 days.

HI hun hope all is well and the honey is still working for you!I have MgD / dry eyes and i want to try this remedy, can you please share with us the name of they honey you use. Also, have you had your eye pressure checked? some studies suggest that honey in the eye can increase the pressure. Do you think that the honey itself is keeping the eye lubricated or is it healing the dry eye problem?

Also, are the eyes whiter now at all times or only when you use the honey? your story really gives me hope, im just nervous about putting something nonsterile (honey) in the eye.

    kind regards, HANA

    thank you!

    Hello,

I was debating, whether I should post this or not. When I was suffering from blepharitis these forum really helped me. So I am hoping my experience and treatments might help someone out there. I have been reading so many comment about the honey, I am glad it is working for some people. But it certainly didn't work for me, I had an awful reaction to it, my eyes were blood shot red after one application. I have had blepharitis for 4 years, MGD with periducatal fibrosis, goblet cell dysfunction, Keratopathy and reactive potsis and I recently got diagnosed with IG4 (an autoimmune disease, this is a disorder caused by chronic inflammation). For 3 years I tried various ophthalmologist and optometrist, they were not very helpful. I did lots of research and decided to see a dry eye specialist, I went to Toronto to get special eye treatments done. The doctor did Intraducal probing, microblepharoexfliation and Lipiflow thermal pulsation on my eyelids. These were expensive treatments, but totally worth it. All the diagnosis were made by the dry eye specialist. All the x number of doctor I saw before him would give me antibiotics, which never helped. Dr. Maharaj (dry eye specialist) took pictures of my eyelids and showed me the damage of the meibomian glands and fibrosis around them which stops the oil from flowing and cause dry eyes. He also mentioned, that dry eyes cause nerve damage leading to depression and anxiety, he recommended psychological help. Also did MG9 inflammation test, which was positive for inflammation. I also wanted to check, if I have an autoimmune disease, which could be causing inflammation, my GP referred me to a rheumatologist. She diagnosised me with IG4 disorder. (I am thinking, it happened because of chronic inflammation from blepharitis). I also had chronic chalazions in my eyelid, I had several chalazions in my right eye, I took homeopathy medication for that. I wish you guys could see before an after pictures, such a difference. I don't drink coffee anymore 😦, no alcohol either.

Here are some of the things that works for me

Xiidra twice a day (from opteva direct an online pharmacy, also less expensive)- Prescribed

    Ocunox at night

Hylo gel (several times a day) or I drop pur gel (less expensive)

Prednisone- Prescribed (for IG4 disoder) + calcium and vitamin D

Omega 3 with high EPA and DHA

    For cleaning:

We love eyes tree tea oil eyelid cleaner (the oil)

I-Lid N' lash tea tree oil cleaner with coconut oil

Tea Tree oil foaming cleaner by traquileyes

I also do warm compress one a day for 10-15 minutes. I use Tranquileyes Chronic Dry Eye XL Advanced Kit- this is the best, it gives moist heat therapy and consistent heat. It is expensive but totally worth it.

Please don't take this as a professional advice, these treatments and products helped me. But you should see a dry eye specialist and do research. I used to read peer reviewed articles from various ophthalmology schools.

I hope this would help someone out there and don't lose hope. You can't cure it, but you can manage it. I know how difficult it is, I suffered so much and some days I was scared of living. Now, I meditate every day, see a psychologist and try to stay positive. I still have bad days, but better than before.

    Cheers!

Ive been following your post. It gave me hope for the honey, but I see you had a relapse. I guess the doctors are telling the truth when they say it is lifetime condition. I believe the honey was just a good remedy for some time. So disappointing. Any update on your eyes ? You mentioned the doctor said you didnt have blephoritis anymore, but you ended having a relapse ?

Hi, I'm 18 and I was diagnosed with blepharitis last January. This disease has made me extremely depressed and my anxiety has been horrible especially knowing I will have this forever. I want to wear makeup again but don't know if its possible and am to scared to try. I have a mild form of blepharitis so eye drops seem to be effective for me. I just wanted to ask are you able to wear makeup like eyeliner and mascara? I've felt so helpless ever since I got this and I've looked for months for people to connect with. I've read all your stories and it gave me some hope. Thank you so much for sharing this it makes me feel much better! I hope all of you feel better and hopefully this horrible disease will be cured in the near future!

      Hey Sara,

I really hope you're doing well!

To answer your question about wearing mascara or eyeliner, you can wear it and I have worn it but just be cautious and super sanitary when washing it off your eyes. There was times my eyes went crazy since I did not wash the make up off properly. If your eyes are flared up or are flaring up a lot, i wouldn't recommend wearing any until your eyes are more managed.

I'm 19 and don't even worry because I am in the same boat as you. I have mild blepharitis but recently my right eye has flared up and it is currently red and both of my eyes get super puffy in the morning now. I got diagnosed with Blepharitis when I was 16 years old.... super devastating to hear that I had to deal with this for the rest of my life. I am currently trying the Manuka Honey method mentioned on this post because I am also desperate to try anything at this point. I did not have any major issues with Blepharitis for the longest time until December of 2020...not sure what happened.

But I am going to keep fighting and you as well keep fighting because you are not alone.

Hoping for a cure for blepharitis in the near future for sure!

Thank you for the advice. I am trying it right now but not sure if I did it right. I have placed the honey on the bottom lashes but nothing sting or burn. Do I have to put the honey inside the eye on top of the redness. Further clarification would be appreciated.
