Blepharitis: In desperate need of a solution..

Posted , 18 users are following.

Hi my name is Melissa. I was diagnosed with Blepharitis around 6 months ago. It affects my left eye and it is continually making my eye lid droop and my skin around my eye very dry. My eye itself can be very sore and irritable, and red. Other times it can be quiet good, however always dry/droopy eye lid.

My current routine:

Each day morning and night I was my lashes and lids with a foam called Sterilid as reccomended by a specialist.

I do hot compresses several times a day (probably 10 - 15 minutes worth)

I dont wear eye liner, I remove make up each night before bed and wash around my eyes.

I take Krill Oil tablets each day (3000mg)

I use artifical tears several times a day (Systane)

And am currently on Doxy-50mg that my doctor put me on.

HOWEVER, none of this really helps (or seems to anyway). What I want to do is find a way to cure Blepharitis or at least make the puffy/droopy eye lid go away as it looks TERRIBLE and unfortunately my appearance is a big part of my job...

Can someone recommend how they have overcome their Blepharitis, or how they eliminated puffy and droopy eye lids?

I am so grateful for all the help I recieve!

Melissa

Hi Melissa and everybody; do not despair!

For years I kept having problems, couldn't see despite glasses. In my opticians clinic I have seen many different practitioners and nobody spotted blepharitis. It got very bad mid January and finally I went to my doctor who immediately diagnosed blepharitis .

She recomended the heat/massage/wash treatment. No medicines whatsoever. Here I found about Wet Ones (Be Gentle if possible) and also bought a heat pad. So it is heat pad/massage/wet Ones for me three times a day. Within days the improvement was amazing and now after one only month I can confidently say that am free of it . I shall keep up the treatment for the three months Lynda79 recommends and will always do it from time to time to make sure my eyes stay healthy.

I strongly recommend to follow Lynda's advice, to whom I am so grateful, and be good, keep it up until the dreadful thing goes away.

I have even used make up without any problems,  I cleaned it off with Wet Ones which worked very well.By the way I threw away my old mascara but kept the brush which I washed well. Now I use that brush dipped only once in the new mascara, then I wash it for next day. The brush that came with the mascara I use only to close it.

I hope you also recover quickly but if it takes a little longer keep it up! It really, really works.

      Hi Martha,

I am avioiding heat and massage as my eye specialist has told me it will just flare my bleph up. I simply do a baby shampoo wash three times a day, take some vitamins and my eye is getting better. I have been doing this for 5 days now with good results.

I tried Wet Ones and my eye flared up very badly.

I am also not using mascara unless I am going to an event and I wash my brush after each use as well.

Also Manuka honey (100% raw) is very very good when rubbed around the eye, very soothing and gets rid of dry skin etc.

I am very sorry, Melissa, that this treatment does not work for you. Of course I am not a doctor and may be there are different types of Blepharitis, although that is not what I found out when investigating the matter. May be it is not Blepharitis but another kind of infection or an allergy. The only thing I can suggest is for you to get a second opinion. Blepharitis, I am told, is caused by Staphilococus Aureous, which is killed by the active agent in Wet Ones. There must be a lab test on your tears to see what kind of bacteria is causing the problem, indeed to see if it is a bacterial infection nor not. Just another thought: I  have once or twice touched by accident the inside of my eye with the Wet Ones (always the Be Gentle ones) and it made it sore for hours! Perhaps that is the problem? best of luck, I really feel for you.

Hi Melissa. I was diagnosed with Blepharitis 8 years ago and it got really bad, not to mention embarrassing. I was constantly needing to clean my eye, oftentimes my friends would bring it to my attention, and eventually my eye began looking deformed. Two months ago I gave up all animal products (eggs, meat, dairy, etc.) in an effort to lower my cholesterol without using drugs. I no longer have Blepharitis and my eye is slowly beginning to regain it's natural shape, about 80% better. Maybe try this for a few weeks, though there may be some vegans out there with the disease. I hope you are able to find something that works. Btw, I found this thread by searching for "my Blepharitis has gone away"....

Hi Scott, I am about to start a FODMAP diet, which basically means I can eat only fruits and veg anyway, so lets see how that goes.

Hello Melissa... I have Blepharitis also and therefore I have tried it all. The one thing that has become clear to me is that there will be no relief as long as you wear eye makeup. It just doesn't go together. Until a cure is found for this awful disease, I can't come near mascara or eye shadow.

The other thing is the Wet Ones. They are great for anyone without alergies but if they should turn out to not work for you.... just know that other wipes on the market have this special ingredient "Benzethonium Chloride". I use "MERIDA Cleansing Wipes" for face & eyes.... sold at Dolorama. They are a Godsend for me. Since using them I don't even need to do compresses. The itching and grittiness have gone.

Good luck finding what works for you.

I never wear eye makeup, or even foundation near the eyes. No mascara, eye shadow, eye liner, nothing.

I have been seeing a natroupath and she is improving my eye, as it begins with the stomach so we are getting that sorted out with good results, as well as baby shampoo washes 2 or 3 times a day on the lash line with a cotton bud.

Hi Melissar, Just before Christmas I had a watery eye on the left side and it would on occasion spill over onto the cheek.  I thought I had a blocked tear duct but didn't know. However, during the Christmas period I had a virus which went into a severe sinusitis issue and woke up one morning with both eyes closed and sticky. Of course a result of the virus and sinusitis. Anyway, after much hand washing and cleaning the eyes with warm water and throwing away my eye make up I ended up seeing the physician.  I was told I had chronic conjunctivitis as well as the sinusitis and was prescribed augmentin to take as well as antibiotic eye drops. Within a couple of days I did notice a huge difference in both eyes with swelling and puffiness going down but after using up all the drops I realized my left eye was still sore and overflowing onto my cheek so I saw an opthalmologist. He thoroughly examined the eyes and concluded that I had both blepharitis and conjunctivitis and gave me steriod drops to use for a week on high dose and then lower dose for another week. He found that the swelling above and below the lids of the eye was so bad that the tear ducts couldn't function and that the white part of the eye which holds the eye ball in the socket was so swollen that it had turned back on itself making the eye tender. He also gave me drops for use with the sterioid drops. I would say that I don't think you have had much help with what is causing this even though it is not curable it can be manageable. I have found that too much tv, computer and looking at close work really doesn't help with the feeling of dry eye or irritation or puffiness. I have found that using warm water pads very soothing and I am now going to try using "green tea" solutions as I think this might be less abbrasive than those Wet Ones. I threw all my old make up away and don't use anything around my eyes currently until I feel this is improving.  I also think living in very dry homes doesn't help either. I was told to take some of those steroid drops and wipe them on to the lids just to ensure they eye was being dealt with on top as well as under the lids.

Hi Melissar11, on Friday I had a treatment at my optician. I think it was called BlephEx. I was offered this treatment free because my optician is trialing the gadget and I have very dry eyes, the symptoms of which wake me up 4 or 5 times a night, leaving me very sleep deprived. I believe my blood pressure tablets cause this side effect. Anyway, I found it a bit tickley at first and very relaxing, I actually got a full 5 hours sleep that night. When I looked into the treatment it said it was actually for blepharitis. I really hope this helps you as I am at my wits end with my dry eyes. Please let me know how you get on. Kind regards El

Did you ever find a solution? I was diagnosed with bleph 2 months ago. The redness, gritty feeling, and pain is gone. But my eyelid still either looks swollen or droopy. I went to several doctors and 2 of them claim it’s allergy related but I’ve eliminated all allergens, so I’m not sure what to do. I just feel like I look awful and I want to look normal again. I want my life back. So please any suggestions would be amazing. I tried antibiotics, steroid creams, eye drops, Cliradex, baby shampoo, warm compress, hydrocortisone cream and nothing has worked.

Try using Wet Ones (antibacterial wipes) in the red box.  They have worked wonders for me.  See Lynda's previous posts.  She is the one who discovered how the Wet Ones can actually cure blepharitits.

Wetones has worked as well as a hot compress for 1 minute over eyes a few days a week.

I also wash my eyes daily with Johnson's shampoo- scrub lightly.

All of these has helped me tremendously. Hope you find relief soon.
