Blepharitis..Wet ones not working

Posted , 10 users are following.

Hi,

I was on this site a year ago as I have been a sufferer of Blepharitis for over 15 years. It did clear up completely a year ago after using the wet ones for a couple weeks but for some reason it has come back and my eyelids are so red, however no crust like before.

I have tried most things, and nothing is getting rid of the inflammation. My eyes look awful everyday.

Has anyone has any success on reducing the redness?

PLeaseeeeeeeeeee help!!!

For really bad flare ups I got to the doctor and get a prescription for erythromycin ointment.  I put it in my eyes over night for a week and it usually knocks it down.  You just might have an infection or a flare up, either way the erythromycin will help.

I'm so glad the erythromycin is working for u !😎 I've been on it for 3 months 3x daily and while it does give me immediate relief I have yet to get any long lasting relief😩

I wouldn't say the erythromycin works.  It just knocks the huge flares down.  I am still in pain each day.  If you use it ongoing it will not be effective.  You need to cycle off of it.  I don't think there is a long term relief out there for this condition.

Yep!  We are all in the same boat. Everything I try helps for awhile, then I seem to grow immune to the benefits.  Just keep trying.  My eyes look like I'm a werewolf they are so red rimmed.  I pray someone will find a cure at some point.  I have no idea how I got this stuff.  To me, that will be the key to finding the cure.  It's awful, as all of you know.  Mine went undetected for 2-3 years. Now my eyelids are permanently thickened from glands that are no longer functioning to allow the fluid to come out.  That looks almost as bad as the redness.  My glasses help to disguise the problems.  I wear makeup cream eyeshadow and foundation when going out to cover the redness.  When i'm home, I wear nothing to get some relief.  Good luck to all of you.

It truly is horrible!! My eyes r so red and watery I look high all the time !! all around my eyes and especially in the corners r beet red ! I swear there must an answers out there but I believe it seems so benign compared to all the deadly illnesses out there that nobody has taken the time to look for a cure ( plus I'm sure there's no funding for it !) in the meanwhile it's up to us , through trial and error, and sharing in this forum , to find a solution to make our lives more comfortable! All I have learned for sure ( besides how drastically different I look and feel ) is that the consensus from most of us is that the drs give us textbook meds and ideas of what do , none of which is giving us back some good quality of life !! When I read about someone who has reached a level of comfort ability it gives me hope to b patient and never give up so that one day I ( and everyone else in this forum ) can find peace while living with blepharitis!! Sorry for the rant but it was heartfelt and done out of complete frustration for all of us!! 🙏😎?

      Dear Terri,

You and all of us should not be hopeless about the bleph. At least to have some relief. To day I applied lubricating ointment /OTC/to one eye to see if my eye would feel less gritty. Yes, it felt less gritty than the one that stayed without the ointment. So let's keep trying.

Dear Rita and all the wonderful fellow sufferers,

This disease seems to b so difficult to deal with and at times it seems hopeless but in my heart I'm forever hopeful and overwhelming thankful to all of u for sharing your knowlege, your trial and errors , your time and your life experience in order to make others more comfortable ?? It is much appreciated!!

That said, I went back to the dr today and was diagnosed with allergic conjunctivitis! I'm off to a "lid" specialist next week because the dr has never seen such a severe case so once again I'm feeling down and out and am doing everything I can not to feel defeated😢 Thanks for listening!

      Hi Terri

on the positive side, once you discover what you are allergic to you can try to avoid the allergens as much as you can. Sometimes it's dairy or another food which we can suddenly become sensitive to. An antihistamine may be prescribed to alleviate the symptoms too. Once you see a specialist he will investigate your symptoms and slowly the causes may be identified. Allergy tests and exclusion diet etc.

I had allergic conjunctivitis for some months at the at the beginning of my bleph condition and it was about 18 months in all before my sensitivities calmed down. Windy weather was an issue particularly. I felt like wearing all round goggles to keep the wind out of my eyes.

try to be optimistic as you will get your eye condition under control but first, like the rest of us, you have to tune into it and learn the characteristics of your own condition. Good luck xxx

I've just recently been diagnosed with bleph ... it stinks!  I've been finding some relief with wiping my eyes with a very, very warm washcloth ... not really wiping, more patting them with the wet washcloth. I then put some jamiacan black castor oil, along with a little jojoba oil or vitamin e oil onto a cotton round and swipe that across my lid ... gently.  It removes any traces of makeup and helps to moisturize the lid.  My lid (it's only affected one eye so far) is very dry & scaly.  This brought some relief, and then the night before last I decided to try good 'ol petroleum jelly ... that actually worked great!

Does anyone have any suggestions for getting the erythro ointment into the eye easily? I find it difficult to "cut" the ointment off the tube as I put it in, so I've taken to putting a dab on my (clean) finger and putting it in that way.

I miss wearing eye liner!!! I've only been using mascara, and I put that one with a fresh wand each morning. I do not use the wand that came with the tube.

      Evelyn,

you say FRESH  WAND. PLEASE TELL ME WHAT fresh wand if its not from the tube? Is it possible to use q-tips? Do you just clean the wand. I think its the very right way what you do because our bleph infection is spreding to the tube if we use the wand repeatedly. Or anybody: please clarify it for me. Thank you.

      Dear Evelyn,

I also miss eyeliner. It took a lot of time for me to understand that I have to forget about eyeliner. I spent  a lot of money  for hypoalergenic eyeliner. The one does not exist.

Plese tell me what  mascara   you are using. Thank you.

You can buy disposable mascara wands, I got my batch from Amazon. Also disposable eyeshadow applicators. You get through more mascara using the disposable wands but as you are advised to renew your mascara every month this works out ok. One wand for each eye. Do not put wand in mascara tube but laid only once from tube wand and use different wands for each eye. All the best, Pamela

since my eyes have stabilised I just use the wand from the tube on both eyes so there is hope for the future.

      Pamela,

Heartfelt thanks. I will order both of them from Amazon.

Yesterday I tried hypoallergenic mascara by Almay. One Coat. I felt good for about 4-5 hours.

Today the entire area of upper lid is inflamed, looks purple and pinching.

My guess is that mascara slides by the lashes directly to the gland's tiny channels. Makes inflammation. I applied warm compress. Massaged. And then applied GenTeal lubricant eye gel. It has has some cooling effect.

      I little relief.

So we the ladies who try to look our best should forget about eyeliner and mascara? What kind of life this is.?

Oh, well. There are worse diseases.

Yes there are worse conditions but take heart. It's taken me three years to get on top of my condition and I know that every part of my regime has to be done without fail morning and night. I ran out of my eye drops for dry eyes and barely had any to apply this morning. I was outside for mist of the morning, there was a slight breeze.....by the afternoon my left eye is hot, tingly and painful. I've just picked up my renewed prescription so have been able to quickly settle my eyes....lesson learnt...don't run out.

i also have greasy eyelids so when I do wear eye shadow I use a cream which apparently counteracts the grease. It sets and works better for me than powder which gets into my eyes during the course of wear. Generally I do not wear eye makeup, just every now and again, special occasions, when I think I can get away with it....it just depends on how my eyes feel.

i ensure my skin looks nice, my eyebrows are well shaped and lightly pencilled, wear a bright lipstick....and wacky specs which are tinted to help with light sensitivity. I guess this is my new ID. Lol

Boots is a leading pharmacy/chemist in the aUk. No.7 is their own brand I think. I use No.7 mascara for sensitive eyes too.

The hayfever season a son is upon us here in the U.K. and my eyes may need extra care at this time despite me taking a strong antihistamine daily all year round. So far, I'm doing ok. I feel very lucky as other people on this site are suffering more complicated conditions or not come to grips with their condition yet.

Pamela, I've have never been to UK. You would be worth the trip. I live in  USA.lol

Thank you for the info and your very positive spirit. I started going out without eye make up. My daughter has been very surprised.

I will try to buy your cosmetics on Amazon.

My latest discovery is Arnica gel that gives me cooling for my inflamed eyelids. It's much less expensive than eye gel in a tiny tube at the drug store.

Boots 7 eye shadow is nowhere to be found in the states.  I use the foundation and serum, but no store near me carries the eye products.  Yes, the greasy eyelids are an issue.  I also have thickend eyelid rims which are noticable if a person really looks at me.  Of course, it is obvious to me ALL of the time.  I do not know how that issue can be fixed. I wish I did.
