Bloating and chesty cough making hernia worse???

I've had a paraumbilical hernia for a couple of years although it was only just diagnosed and I am on a refferal list re. a repair operation. Sometimes it gets a little bigger if I lift or something and the last couple of days I've had a fairly bad chesty cough. This has, I think, agrivated it a little. However today I am very gassy (for want of a better word) and a bit bloated, my hernia is a little bigger, my stomach quite hard and I have a niggling little pain in my lower left, towards the front. My question is this - have I done some serious damage to myself and should I get to A&E asap or am I just bloated and need a bit of fibre to have a clear out? I've been awake all night being paranoid about it!

I do have a peptic ulcer and ocassional IBS if that helps anyone?

I have a different kind of hernia but recognize the gassy , bloated symptoms. I think you are spot on about the bowels needing a clean out. I have been prescribed a drug called domperidone and it relaxes the muscles around the junction of the esophagus to the stomach. I had so much gas and pain and was always bloated before I was put on this drug. I still get some gas but it doesn't drive me crazy. My stomach would get very hard also and I could feel hardness on my right side under my ribs. I don't think you've done anything serious but I would talk to your doctor about your symptoms and see if he has some ideas. In the meantime get some fibre into yourself. It won't hurt.

Brilliant, thank you! That makes me feel a bit less stressed! Hopefully I'll sleep now as I'm up at 7 for work!

Hi Lousurfer, I have a Hiatus Hernia which some days can be worse and makes me cough and feel full, but if it is painful and you are worried maybe you should go to doctors or A & E try not to worry

Mine is only small, a little smaller than a grape, on the top of my belly button, doc said it was a paraumbilical hernia. My cough is from a cold I'm just getting over from the weekend so I'm not worried about that, its that which I'm afraid is making the hernia worse. That said, sonce my opening post I've had weetabix and OJ and have just had a poop and I do feel a little better... smile
