A very good morning to all
When having v/section Monday the plabotomist commented, that
It's in the pipeline for students to use our discarded blood to do
Experiments (this qe hospital Birmingham anyway)
We will have to sign a form of consent ,she didn't have a lot of details
My question to you all would you be for this or against?????
Cheers philx

Morning Phil - I'd definitely be FOR this. Our student doctors need to learn and the best way must be to have actual materials to experiment with? Our over-loaded blood is just being discarded anyway - so I don't see this would be unethical.
It might even help to work out a way to help those of us with HCT.

Hi Phil. Never heard of that before. If they don't use your blood for donation, the least they could do is use it to learn from...so I say YES! Like the man from Delmonte....

Our National Institutes for Health in Bethesda has a Phlebotomy program for Hemochromatosis and they do studies. I tried to get my Hematologist to send my records so I could be accepted into the NIH program so the doc won't throw away my blood each time. But, as far as I know they did not send my records so I didn't get into the program. The doc makes $80 from me each time I get my blood tested and arrange for a phlebotomy so there isn't much insentive for referring me. So, I contacted a local INOVA hospital and now I donate my blood to them every time I need a phlebotomy. They come to my area regularly so it is easy. In closing,
I have no problem donating blood to an institution that uses my blood for experiments that help Hemochromatosis patients.

How horrid that they did that to you, but good on you for sorting it out! It makes me cross when so called health professionals use their patients to make money and not to help especially when you wanted to help others.
Well done

I don't mind, there wouldn't be any implications.

Hi Phil, I would definitely- it would only be disposed of otherwise and it could be used for research / teaching. I'm an organ donor anyway so i'm happy to let others benefit from my "waste" blood.
Cheers.

It really is up to you if you're okay with it, my Mom has this and she gave gallons of blood and they used it to transfuse patients with anemia(low iron)...good news in doing the phlebotomy is that it can prevent damage from high iron levels and it can send you into remission(no signs symptoms)is it has been years and she is back to NORMAL as the bloodletting returned her levels back to normal...Best Wishes, keep up your spirits...Take Care??

Hi Lindalee
I'm a bit confused as to how they could use your mom's blood
From venesection ,I don't know where you come from, but in England
Blood taken from venesection is discarded???to date I have given
5 pints all disgarded,I am informed that once in maintenance, you
Go to the transfusion centre and donate blood and provided the iron
Levels are acceptable they can use your blood.
Cheers Phil x

Some countries use the blood as donor blood, but yeah, not in the UK. It's great to be in maintenance now, as my blood is off to save lives...a great feeling. I'm going every six weeks at the mo...may find in time I can go four times a year...see how the levels pan out over next year. Trying to keep it under 50. Mike.
