Blood clots and passing tissue. Did I have a miscarriage?

A couple weeks ago I started getting cramps and brown spotting so I thought my period was starting. I then passed many large blood clots and what looked like white tissue with a sac attached. The bleeding then stopped within a day. I went to the gp the next day and they took a pregnancy test which was negative.

The doctor claims it had to be discharge as I could not have been pregnant. What do you think it was?
