Blood in saliva

Posted , 46 users are following.

For 2 months I have had blood present in mouth when I wake. I had a chest X ray, gastroscopy, scope from ENT doctor and dental checkup with no cause found. My doctor is not concerned. If I spit now, it will be clear but after spitting around 4 or 5 times, it starts coming through as blood. I'm worried this could be salivary gland cancer. Is this a potential symptom, or would ENT have checked for this? I stupidly forgot to ask during the appointment as I was glad she didn't find anything concerning. I can't find anything online connecting bleeding to salivary gland problems but I'm still concerned.

Im having this for 8 or 9 months also, on and off, and i noticed its when i wake up or after lying down for much time... Ive had a nasolaryngoscopy and my ENT said it was ok, but it found out a irregularity of the mucosa of the nasopharynx, but he said was ok, but i think this is the problem...sad

Anyway, its very little blood, almost imperceptible in most times...

Hi Miggy did your blood in spit problem clear up? I have exactly the same had all sorts of test done chest ct scan, Bronchscopy, endscopy and ent scope nothing was found, it's really concerning me as had it now for nearly 4 months and not getting any better I just fear something has been missed.

Hi Donna. Yes it did. I had so many concerns at the time as to the cause and had numerous procedures done from gastroscopy to ENT. None of them found a cause. I visited a dentist who said that they was no visible sign of any bleeding in the mouth yet arranged for me to have a deep clean of the gums around the teeth. That solved it so I guess it was grom the gums despite the dentist not seeing any sign of bleeding. In hindsight in makes sense suction in the mouth or continuous spitting tended to make the bleeding worse. It has now been a significant time since my original post and I have had no further bleeding.

When you say deep clean of gums do you mean a hygienist teeth clean? I'm not coughing any up but it just comes from clearing my throat or when spitting not pure blood but saliva is pink is this what you had? Glad yours has resolved as it is worryingI will book an appointment with the dental hygienist and hope that will also solve the problem, i appreciate your reply as am at my wits end with now.

Hi Miggy, so glad you came back to let us know how you're doing.  I'm dealing with the same issue and like Donna says it comes also when clearing my throat and spitting but I haven't had a cough...I keep thinking it's related to my acid reflux issues as they can get bad for me...However, I also keep thinking it could be related to my teeth/gums as I haven't had a deep cleaning in a couple of years now.  Did you also get this when clearing your throat? thanks so much for your help!!

Hi Kelli, how long have you been having this now? It is on a daily basis? As mine wasn't but it does seem to be occurring nearly every day now, you sound like me with having all the tests done and nothing really showing , I also had gastroscopy which showed mild inflammation in eosphugus but the comsultant didn't seem to think it was causing the blood as it was quite low down. Do you also get a blood taste in your mouth? I've just had some blood tests taken as apart from that the doctor says she doesn't know what to do as I've had all the tests, I'm beside myself with worry with it so it's good to chat to other people in the same situation as it's not a common complaint.

Hi Donna, I've noticed this the first time in september of last year.  I've been to emergency room twice because of this now plus other appointments to ENT, pulmonologist and gastro but no answers. The ENT said my throat is irritated but said he didn't see any type of bleeding going on and gastro said I have grade A esophagitis.  So a dental issue could definitely be the problem, I do get the blood taste in mouth from time to time especially in the mornings.  I'm worried too, but I will see a dentist and go from there...

My throat feels irritated as well and I have constant mucus in throat and always feel I have to clear my throat but all the cameras I've had down show nothing inflammed, have you had a bronchscopy? Camera down lungs? It's so frustrating having been through all the tests and still not getting a answer, I've googled and it's the worst thing as it always comes up with cancer, do you mind me asking how old you are Kelli? Are you still concerned or are you learning to live with it now as it freaks me out every time I see the blood.

Hi Donna I'm only 30 and I've never smoked.  I've only had 4 chest xrays and chest CT scan, all clear...but yeah, lots of throat clearing which the pulmonologist  and ENT said it's due to LPR (reflux).  How old are you if you don't mind my question? Thanks!!

sorry I hit submit too fast...Pulmo said he didn't see a need for me to get a broncoscopy as I don't have a cough/shortness of breath, etc.  I was told though that I have high blood pressure which I'm trying to contorl, I've gained quite a bit of weight since last year, so I'm trying to lose some and hopefully that will help with this issue also? So not sure what else to do at this point, I'm just trying to enjoy life for now.

So you've had 4 X-rays and a ct scan since September to now? Has this been done on NHS? Do you feel they've missed something as that's how I feel because I've got no answers and it's ongoing, have they reassured you it's nothing sinister? I'm 54 Kelli so a lot older than you, gave up smoking 24 years ago and was only a social smoker so I am at higher risk. What did they do at emergency room a X-ray?

Did you say it occurs on a daily basis or just now and again, sorry for all the questions but it's just good to chat to someone with the same problem as me.

Hi Ebonio how long have you had blood in spit? What test came back positive? Have you had lung X-ray or ct scan? I can understand your concerns as it is scary having blood in spit, I had appointment with dental hygenist today and been told I have gingivitis so hoping and praying this is the cause of my spitting up of blood only time will tell so worth getting a dental check as well, let me know how you get on.

Hi eboni, if it's helibactor ployri they will treat you with a two week course of antibiotics I had it about 3 years ago , surprised you haven't had a endscopy camera in stomach to confirm it, sounds like they know what's causing the bleeding and you don't have much to worry about, good luck
