Blood in saliva

Posted , 46 users are following.

For 2 months I have had blood present in mouth when I wake. I had a chest X ray, gastroscopy, scope from ENT doctor and dental checkup with no cause found. My doctor is not concerned. If I spit now, it will be clear but after spitting around 4 or 5 times, it starts coming through as blood. I'm worried this could be salivary gland cancer. Is this a potential symptom, or would ENT have checked for this? I stupidly forgot to ask during the appointment as I was glad she didn't find anything concerning. I can't find anything online connecting bleeding to salivary gland problems but I'm still concerned.

Does anybody else get a sore throat, burning sensation, shortness of breath? (As well as spitting the blood up)

Also has anybody had a diagnoses this has been happening to me on and off for two years now (scary) I've had two appointments with ENT, X-rays, blood tests and a dentist appointment.

I got the cure. Let me share my experience. Hope, it help others.

I was experiencing Spit blood at night, when I first time wake up from sleep. I first went to a dentist. He cleaned my teeth build ups and asked me to do flossing regularly. I did so but not good result. Then I went to my primary care physician and did blood test and chest X ray. All reports came normal.

I was a bit scared. I tried to change my food habits.  I used to eat a lot of meats. I reduced that and added more veges. However, I observed no good result.

I consulted with my cousin and uncle, who happened to be doctors. They strongly predicted that it is a gum issue.  So, I again went to dentist to have a thorough investigation.

After deeply investigating dentist told me that, my last pair of teeth are wisdom teeth. Regular flossing or brushing cannot clean that last pair effectively because of the complexity of wisdom teeth. As a result, food gets stored in the gaps of wisdom teeth and they stay there. They thought, it causes bacteria and the bleeding.

She advised me to use something called Water Pik. It is water flossing, instead of regular flossing, that can wash away gaps in all teeth, especially in those last pair of wisdom teeth.

I started using Water Pik and it works like magic. Last 5 days no more blood...1-2 min water flossing everyday solved my problem.  I hope, my experience helps others.

Yo thanks for posting your experience! was a frequent visitor of this post recently and most of the cure's suggested something dental.

Had a similar bout around 2 months ago wher after a night of drinking I spit out and there was blood which really panicked me. went to the doctor and was diagnosed with bibasal pneumonia and was thankful that I was finally able to identify it at first. 2 weeks of antibiotics and it seemed to vanish but then came back. this time no cough, and if i tried harvesting saliva to spit out after 3-5 times it would come out as blood tinged saliva. which really worried me, had a CT scan of my Chest, a Naso Laryngoscopy only to be told by an ENT that I was completely healthy, no source of bleeding found. finally after finding this forum I told my dentist my paranoid state of mind and she said she'd try to find a source of bleeding

lo and behold it seemed like there was a particular red spot on the gums of my upper left molar and perscribed me with a mouthwash along with vitamin C supplements. the symptoms vanished a lot faster than it did than the anti biotics but i find myself here again with the metal taste every now and then. Yesterday was a bit of a scare because i thought "hey 2 weeks have passed maybe if I spit out now nothing will happen" but something did, again with the blood in saliva, not as concentrated but not rust colored, luckily my dad has this water pik you talked about that just got in the mail a week ago. Going to test it out but I'm actually pretty optimistic about it

Cheers and thanks for your experience! Will probably get back to these forums to report if my condition improved. and to anyone else out there paranoid, you aren't alone! :D

    CHECK YOUR GUMS!!!

I have been following this blog for a while. It has been 10 months since I noticing blood in my spit.  I did everything, went to my dentist, ENR, MRI and did several other awful related tests.  My ENR doctor even told me that we may need test for cancer.

Anyway, my dentist dropped the ball.  I have gum disease which he failed to notify me.  I finally found a periodontist, however as all dentist just want to clean your teeth and bill it.  But I found out that I have gum disease.  I had to go to 4 different dentist/periodontist. I have started using Parodontax toothpaste and Listerine for gums disease and gingivitis. I also changed my heavy vibrate toothpaste from Oral B.  I bought a lighter toothpaste with slow speed. Now, my blood is completely disappear.  Also, I have been flossing my teeth every day.

First, it was hard to believe that it was my gums.  Because I never seen any sign.  Change your dentist and go to a periodontist. Use, paradontax toothpaste, Listerine for bum disease/gingivitis, upgrade your toothbrush and floss your teeth.  This changed my life. Good luck to you all!

I do have same problem with blood in saliva when I spit at night or early in the morning. I do have pain in my abdomen for the past three months. I mentioned to my family doctor about the blood 1.5 years ago, done some CT scan on my chest, CT scan on my abdomen (without contrast) checking my kidney and liver, nothing found. two or three times blood test, and a breath test done for helicobacter pylori, all showing negative results. I read a lot of articles and have found information on pancreatic problems, which seem in symptoms similar what I feel on my body, but necessarily related to it, because there are other digestive issues related to each other by similar symptoms. I worry, I don't know where to go to ask for help. My family doctor told me, it comes from my head, he doesn't think at all about any serious problem, but recently prescribed me another abdomen CT scan, this time around with the contrast, more accurate, still I have to wait two full months to get it. If there is something seriously wrong going on the time is crucial. In the past, four years ago, I was diagnosed with Helicobacter Pylori, the issue then was not handled well, probably not cured at all, still a follow up gastrologintenstinal tests, including colonoscopy six months later, did not show the bacteria in my stomach anymore, so I did not bother anymore.

Is here anyone who can provide me with some helpful information? Have a healthy and happy New Year 2018 !!!

Have you done a biopsy because apart from reducing the acid level in stomach, H Pylori gets itself burrowwed in the cells to escape the high acid environment.

I am sorry to hear of your current problem - have you thought of asking for a second opinion from another doctor as you think your present one doesn't seem to be taking you seriously.   As patients we are entitled to ask for this.  I asked for this  and got a lot more information from the second doctor.

    Best wishes for 2018

I think that may be caused by lack of water in one's body

Hey i know this was a year ago and I’m sure you probably have it taken care of but if it’s occurring in the winter and only in the morning like mine, it could be fromyour sinuses drying up while your asleep and cracking cause a mminor bleed. Hope everyone is doing well now though!
