Blood in semen

Posted , 10 users are following.

My husband is 46 and has had blood in his semen a numbe of times. He's visited his GP and had a rectum examination and blood tests, which I'm assuming to be PSA? He's due to go back to the GP for his results. I'm planning on going with him but would appreciate any pointers really, as to what questions we should definately ask. I've read that the PSA results aren't always a reliable indicator so, are there any other investigations we should press for? To be honest, I think i've 'over- googled' sad

You are correct, at least in my case. I am in the US. We sometimes have the same problem here, depending on the insurance company we have to deal with, we may have to go through a gp to get approval to see a specialist such as a urologist. The problem, as I pointed out before, is that the gp frequently is not qualified to deal with this type of problem. In fact, it is hard to find a urologist who really understands these problems and is qualified to deal with them, but one has a better chance with a urologist. Under the circumstances, all one can do is speak frankly and courteously about your desire to speak with a urologist, and hope you can convince the gatekeeper gp to let you through. It's unfortunate that we have to deal with these administrative problems to get the medical care we need. The bottom line is that these problems are best dealt with by a good urologist, and we have to jump through the necessary hoops to get to one, even if we have to pay out of our own pockets. Finding the correct answers to these problems is too important to allow ourselves to be tied around the axle by these administrative issues.

Hi all. Just a little update. We went to the Doctors but saw a different Dr to the one my husband had been dealing with. He said he was not unduly concerned but, would refer my husband to a Urologist. I asked if a PSA test had been done and what the reults were but the Dr was somewhat surprised I wanted to know!

I'm going to ring the Hospital today to see what the waiting time should be (we're in the UK).

Again, thanks for the replies and support.

You will not like the waiting time quoted, as urology tends to be very busy wth us old men:-). The hospital web site will have a section giving very optimistic average waiting times for fist apointment and then for treatment.

Hi Derek. Yes, i've just rang the hospital and was advised that the wait could be anything up to 10 weeks, depending upon what the Dr has said and what the Consultants think when they look at my husband's results.
